OK, I don't really want to open this can of worms, but I want to say something:
in this thread, some comments were made about the fact that some were communicating in a language other than English. I know this site is hosted in the US which is predominantly English, but in certain cases (like this one IMO) using a native tongue seemed perfectly acceptable to me. It was for clarification of a challenge topic, which can be difficult to translate.
I'm continuously impressed by the members here for whom english is a second (or third or fourth or fifth) language, yet predominantly use English. I'd be useless on a site with any other language, since my only other ones (Spanish and French) are barely developed enough to order a beer and locate a Restroom.
I'm not saying this to chastise those who asked for the english translation; I'm saying it to commend those who usually do the translating for us.
I assume I'll offend somebody here, but I really don't mean to...just respect to the Icelandic, the French, the Spanish, the Newfoundlanders :), the Germans...you get my point - I hope :) |

I totally agree and think we should respect the diversity of the people who make this site the success that it is.

Having lived and traveled all over the world...we English speakers sometimes forget that we are outnumbered many times over by those who speak other languages. I found the forum containing the entire process fascinating! Hey...maybe once in a while we should attempt to learn a little from others through their language! For one...its nice to have a "world-wide" view on this site!

well, personally, my feeling is that it's exclusionary. it makes me personally feel left out.
why wouldn't they speak the same language as the rest of us? don't they care about our input? don't they want us to chime in and share? if not, then why are they posting here? are they jsut using us for our photo contest and they don't give a crap about knowing us personally?
sure seems like that, sometimes, especially, when they go on and on in their threads, and other people come to the thread and say 'hi, what are you talking about, i'd like to join in' and they don't answer .. or people say 'i'm coming to iceland, can i be in your gtg, too ?' and they don't answer. they just keep talking around those people as if those peopel didn't exist.
that *is* exclusionary.
and don't give me no guff about being some kinda parochial american - i was born outside the U.S., and so were both of my parents. I speak 2 languages fluently, and can get by in 2 or 3 others.

I think it is ok to explain something in another language. But it is not ok to have discussions in other languages and ignore others. It difficult to write in an other language than your native(I have to use a dictionary myself). Writing in English takes me about 5 times as long as writing in Dutch, and most of the time I am not very happy with the result. But I think it is good way to improve my english.

this is the reason I hesitated to post this, Mag. In this case they were trying to clarify a few things about the challenge, which I think is perfectly legit. Maybe I don't read the forums enough to have seen the other times you're talking about, but in this case I found it to be appropriate.
As I said, no dis to you or the others - just good for those who usually do a good job in their use of english.
But since you speak 5 languages, van I count on you to let me know if someone's making fun of me in another language? thanks - you're the goods.

i agree with this 100%. I guess that the post where this all came to a head was just because of timing.
And I think your english is excellent ! :)

@Mag - I think it's amusing that they type in Icelandic (since that's who we're talking about). When I messaged about the gtg, they didn't ignore me, they said that using the translator was silly, which it is. Try translating Arnit's site and you'll see why...it just doesn't work that well. Everything is "I snuggle up to ..." Which roughly translates to "I want you to..." or "I encourage you to..." as far as I can tell. *shrug* I don't think it's wrong - we are lucky in that they speak English, but what if they didn't at all?
