Can't give you an Icelandic translation - but with your native landscape I expect the Icelandic contingent here to do very well. Summer (especially this outrageously hot one) in southern England isn't so easy ... :-)

You can't write this in english to make it understandable for everyone? How rude!

It can mean a lot of things in English. As was said, it can mean empty, like a desert or tundra or even a forest, since desolate can mean empty of things, or it can mean empty of everything besides the environmental framework. It can mean empty of posessions, as a family made delolate through war or act of nature. It can mean empty of emotion, as when a great misfortune befalls a person and they are numbed and shocked.

I bet ppl can find some way of saying it doesnt fit the challenge though:o......

Well, not totally open. Flowers, kids and pets would be a hard sell. Unless your flower garden was eaten by locus, or maybe your kids or pets have all their hair shaved off due to lice, flees or some other act of destruction.

Hmmm. Our cat's loosing his hair and covered with scabs cause it turns out he's allergic to fleas. Maybe I'm on to something here...

Oh, but I guess that would get me an auto-deduction from Myqyl since he hates cat shots. Or would this be an auto-addition, since the cat's suffering?

Scott, why did you have to make me laugh so loud with so many people in the room with me?

Addition! A certain +2! :)

Actually I like cat... Especially if you marinate it overnight first :)

I'm really excited about my submission for this one. It takes 2 normally "happy" subjects, but makes them undoubtedly depressing looking.

I think I have very desolate picture - "Beggar Children on a street junction" but I just cannot bring myself to post it here. Its like preying on the miseries of those poor souls.

Then I have a picture of a sickly dog feeding in a garbage dump...

HELP!! Need some inanimate desolate objects, will folks understand "Desolation of Smaug", JRRT anyone ?

NO! Don't explain it to him! Then more Icelandic photographers will win ribbons! (...just kidding--and complimenting you islanders!)
