I guess the best way is providing an article from 2006 for all to read. It's about elsapo and I hope he does not mind me bring this up. It may have been posted on this site before but worthy of another posting especially if you read the exert from the article I have provided below.
Originally posted by The Dallas Morning News: Rebecca Plumley, photojournalism and newspaper teacher at McKinney North, met Justin two years ago during his introduction to the art in a Photojournalism 1 course.
"Honestly, that semester, he didn't stand out. He was quiet. He did his work," Ms. Plumley said.
Justin didn't reveal any outstanding strengths in photography until enrolling in Photo 2, she said.
"From one semester to the next, his strengths in photographs quadrupled," Ms. Plumley said.
Ms. Plumley said Justin shoots weekly photographs for an online competition through www.dpchallenge.com ΓΆ€“ a Web site for worldwide professional and amateur photographers to refine their photography prowess with regular challenges. Justin has won several of these, he said. |
You can read the full article here. This user has talent! Congratulations elsapo.

It's helping me a lot, mainly because it makes me think about a theme, and it opened my mind to post processing.
See others' pictures is also a great way to learn. There are some amazing photographers here. |

:) I notice at the end of the article, the teacher just couldn't actually concede that Justin takes better pictures than her ... only "just as good".
that's funny |

Interesting concept :)
I know that DPChallenge helped me quite a bit. Without something like DPChallenge, I wouldn't likely have pushed myself to become a decent photographer. As far as improving in an environment like a photography class at school, I think DPChallenge would be an invaluable tool. What we learn here is how to produce images that stand out in a short amount of time. This idea is very similar to what you would find in a classroom. You get photography assignments with a deadline. It also works well to some degree as training in photojournalism. Newspaper assignments come out a few days, and sometimes only a few hours before the assignment must be completed. You learn how to think quickly and produce compelling images.
Back when I used to compete seriously here at DPC, I had a recipe for success that worked out very well for me. It would probably still work well.
7-day Challenge Schedule:
Days 1 through 4 - Brainstorming and visualizing the final image... no shooting.
Days 5 and 6 - Shooting
Day 7 - Editing and deciding what to enter

Sometimes it's hard for the teacher to admit their students have exceeded their own capabilities. |
