Technology challenge: How many cell phones were there? How many CDs sitting on Turntables were there? For me, this challenge had the least number of good ideas. I wish people would spend a little more time thinking up something unique to shoot.

It was a difficult challenge to do. And it did turn out in many cases cliche and passe. The submissions may reflect the face of technology. It's not neccessarily pretty and easy to photograph, but sure is needed and useful. I liked the challenge because it made me think. Yeah, where's your submission?

Trust me, thinking outside the box on this one incurs the same wrath as being cliched. ;-)

I found myself giving really low scores this time around, which I don't like. I'm finding that I'm more comfortable with a "ranking" system rather than a "rating" system. Once I get my initial votes tallied, I go through the whole list and start shuffling things based on what I think is better/worse than the others. Unfortunately, this time, I've shuffled down a whole lot.

On the surface I can see how people thought that this was a difficult challenge. But technology is really all around us -- it's not just computers and electronics. Took me all week to come up with my idea but it looks like a lot of people just pulled something off of their desk (or just shot their desk).

I think next week's topic is going to be even harder (especially on scores) because it's such a subjective topic. Those are frustrating to me much more than something with a more definitive it-fits-or-it-doesn't theme.

i was this close to actually taking a picture with some records and my turntable, being a vinyl junky. i'm glad i didn't. that cliche snuck up on me.

it's too bad though. one of those on gramaphone turntables with the big horn that plays those old solid 78s would have made a really cool picture.

So my photo has none of that kind of stuff (I wanted to shoot my 300 baud modem) but is completely different. So...I've just managed to crawl above a 4.1 this evening. Isaac's hot on my heels at 3.6!

Man! I just noticed his overall average is 3.94 and mine is only 4.61. That's not very good for a 45-year headstart...

The reality is CLICHE shots do fare better. Look at the macro contest for one.

Get any artistic interesting blurry out of focus out of depth field shot on here, you will get nailed. :)

The one i submitted for the Technology challenge was pretty out of the ordinary and probably a bit unrelated to technology unless you actually think about it. So i expected a low score and i do get low scores, big deal :)

This is the type of challenge that is based on interpretation and ideas, and as such, the typical submission is something that is obvious. A CD, a computer, a board, a macro shot of a CPU, blah blah blah. I haven't seen an image of the application of technology though, as it relates to daily lives. But that's expected. It's sort of like the MACRO challenge where you'd expect 20 shots of a flower and most of them the cliche "sunrise" types.

Paganini, I just don't agree. My shot relates to technology in daily life, but people no longer notice. 5 out of 7 comments have: 'I don't see the technology'. That is because you are used to it and no longer realize that it is all around us.

Just because a shot is cliché or passé, doesn't make it a bad photograph or unworthy of winning on any given week. It's very subjective anyway. While some people will be saying, "Oh no, not another cute cat picture", you'll have as many (if not more) saying, "Awww, cool. Another cute cat picture". It wouldn't be a cliché in the first place if it wasn't so popular.

I know that originality will figure a lot in the voting and a lot of people submitting my have thought that their idea was original at the time.

For the record, I really like cats and I submitted one of the CD on turntable shots :o)

I was disappointed in the overall standard of the shots this week though.

I can understand a cat or dog photo as long as it meets the challenge, but the submission with nothing but the dog's face is just unbelieveable. I mean, come on. A little restraint.

I have to agree with that one! While being an ok dog picture, it had no place in this week's challenge. I was a bit dubious about the cat picture too.

It is not my shot, let that be clear first.

Imagine the dog is a customs drug sniffer. Specialized in finding all sorts of illegal substances. Using that is a kind of technology, the dog has to be trained etc. A big wet nose in your face is bringing all that technology really close to you. :-)

but that's not displayed in the shot, or in the title. there has to be a context for me to accept that as valid.
11/20/2002 06:13:32 AM · #17
I'm convinced it's a robot dog.

It was a genetically engineered hamster.

the results so far on my shot are equally baffling.

it's not a cliche or passe. it's very original, and totally unique in the challenge, yet it's obviously about technology and the triumphs of technology. You don't have to think too hard to 'get' my shot :P.

it also tells a story instead of just being a 'thing'.

it's clear and in-focus, not dark, meets the technical considerations.

yet it's scoring in the mid 5's.

this is not a complaint, just an expression of puzzlement. i wonder if people think i faked the shot. so hard to tell since i'm getting so few comments : ) ..

The cat one I quite liked - it was cute yes, but it was also quite clever
in how it tied into the technology theme and also how the cat wasn't
gratuitous at all.

The dog's face I'll be interested to hear why it was there - I suspect it
could be a late macro entry...

without my picture, none of us would be communicating. (technology in action)

Sorry to disagree with all of you. I have really enjoyed this one very much. I've enjoyed the humor that has been added while still meeting the challenge. I think it takes more brains to do that than to just point and shoot. This one has been a blessing to me this week. And I've given more 8's than I ever have before. Guess you don't need a good laugh every once in a while. I've enjoyed this very much.

Ahhh... that could be my problem. I'm brain challenged.

Yes there has been a lot of repetitiveness this week, but there have also been a number of gems out there too. Looking at the number of entries this week vs last week, it would appear this challenge was actually a bit more challenging. I know I didn't come up with anything, and stayed home this time around. Looks like about 120 other people had the same problem.

The dog photo is not mine but it could be representing that all dogs came from wolves and our breeding technology has allowed us all the dog breeds we have now. I may be looking into it a little deep but thats what I got from it.
