OK guys - I apologize for me slacking on info here - life has gotten real busy in our household.
I know we wont be able to pick a date that will allow everyone here to come. So this is what it looks like we will go with.
Hocking Hills GTG on Saturday June 16th. Because we have a number of people that will be traveling several hours to get here we will include a potluck lunch. That way we can save some money and time trying to find a location to eat. This should allow us a cheap and easy opportunity for a meal.
I know that we have a couple of people that are interested in this GTG that are also familiar with Hocking Hills so maybe we can get some input from them as to which areas to visit. The park is massive and there is more to do than what is feasible in one day. Can we get some volunteers as far as tour guides for the area?
I will go ahead and edit the first post as people commit to coming and what they are bringing food wise. As we get confirmations I will also email out our cell phone number so people who cant make it as early as we probably will be there can get a hold o fus for our current location. Odds are that Aimee and I will try and get there around 9am or so depending on when we are able to drop our kids off at the sitter.
I will bump this post along throughout the coming days. Please go ahead and PM those who you think might be interested in going and link them to this thread.
Again - I apologize for slacking on info but we are headed in the right direction now. Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions and I will try and get you answers. Hoep to see a bunch of you in June! |

There is a large picnic area with lots of parking at Old Man's Cave. Besides Old Man's Cave (An huge undercut really), there are two waterfalls associated with the Old Man's Cave gorge/hiking area. It would be very easy to spend 3 or more hours in this location, have lunch, then head for some of the other falls in the area (Ash Cave and Cedar Falls). However, by June 16th there may only be water running at one of the falls (Cedar Falls). Still, the rock formations are stunning (as shown below) and the photo ops plentiful. There is also a Washboard Music Festival in Logan, OH, twenty miles north of the State Park (Also home of the closest resturants).
Here are a couple of links for the Hocking Hills area.
Area Info, State Park Info, and Washboard Music Fest.
Tim
Edit: Add music festival info.

Only one month away...
Count me in, thanks for the update.
I can rough it, backpacking /camping, I've been an Assistant Scoutmaster for at least ten years. That ended 2-1/2 years ago.
I can build fires, too, using hand-sanitizer on wood.
If my wife comes camping in a tent is not her thing. |

Thanks for the notice, Tim.
I can't commit yet. Awaiting info from out-of-town family. They're coming down sometime in June. Sounds like fun! |

Thanks for the PM, timfythetoo.
I admit to being a bit embarrassed to show up with my Kodak, after seeing all the Canon's and Nikon's on the list. I've done OK with it, but I don't want to hopping around the ledges like a mountain goat while you all are hauling around tripods and monster cameras.
We have the kids' local Soap Box Derby on the 16th, but thanks for the invitation. Nice of you to try to set this up.
If anyone gets out this way for the Covered Bridge Festival in the fall, PM me and I would be happy to meet with you and show you around.
Thanks again...
Joy

Sorry you can't make it Joy - but we might come up and check out the covered bridge thing. Keep us updated.
And to everyone else here, I basically just PMed those who had posted here and a couple of people that I knew live in Ohio. If you know anyone else that would be interested in possibly coming but havent seen their names here please PM them a link to this thread. I know we have more Ohioans around. Give them a shout out. |

OK everyone. Only 9 days away. I will focus this weekend on trying to layout some sort of game plan at least for meeting in the morning. I believe Aimee and I were looking to arrive around 9/9:30. If you shoot me a PM I can send you our cell phone number so you can have a contact there in case of getting lost or coming later.
Potluck is still up in the air. Would you all be interested in potluck or just fend for yourself/bring your own type situation?
Let me just say again that we are so excited about htis gtg on several levels. I hope to see all of you there!

I'll have to ask my wife what goes with delicious Smoked Beef Brisket.
My wife, the excellent gourmet cook, doesn't take pictures, climb hills, or sleep in tents. She may have some similar company hopefully.
I'll bring my Expedition-7 backpack/camera bag, ready for anything. I was an Assistant Scoutmaster for over 10 years and we camped all year round. I don't plan on camping there, now. I can make fires, too. Great for cooking or for photos. |

I'M UP FOR THE POTLUCK-I'm bringing something-just not sure what yet :)
Also, I want to know about times as well. I mean, I know I could leave whenever, but my friend has a show in Byesville that I want to make at 9pm that night. Thanks!

Hello again everyone. Just in case anyone is lookign at spending the night in the area check out this link - where to stay around Hocking Hills - that might help out some of you Cleveland guys. I wish we had more room at our place in Columbus as we would invite people over to sleep. If we end up returning to Columbus at a reasonable time though anyone staying around that area would be more than welcome to come over for a campfire or something at our house. We are just a mile or two from Easton. We can play that by ear.
Sounds like potluck is the way to go. Any reason for me to bbq is a good thing for me. Anyone have a mini charcoal grill just in case we cant find a park grill?
And go ahead and bump this thread through the weekend just in case some other Ohioans havent seen it.
Just a week away! WHooh hooh!!! |
