I'm the person with the really small flower in the "Round" challange, and believe me, 5 people have told me its small...
My question is how do I make it 640x480 but keep it in the file size limitation?
Gideon
P.S. I'm using InfranView for all this.

Your camera is capable of real large size images so
1) You need to get a better software than just a viewer - try PaintShop
2) You need to read up about jpg image compression - specially the saving for web parts
Hope this helps |

Ifranview should do the trick for you actually... i'm not very familiar with it but it does do resampling that works pretty well...

Actually Irfan-View does not allow you to set the level of compression for JPEGs, so it's a bit hit and miss. There should be a shareware image editor that'll allow you to save a JPEG of any size with a custom level of compression. Then you can make it under 150k.
EDIT: My mistake... if you click on 'Advanced' in the 'Save As' dialogue box in Irfan-View you can adjust the JPEG compression there! Adjust that until you get it under 150k.

Now sure what OS you are using but do a file search in your harddrive.
Look for "photoed" This is microsoft version of a photo editor.
This will allow you do resize to proper pixel size.
Then wehn you save, use "Save As" and click on "More" then slide to decrease the size less than 147k or so for submittion. |

In I-View, to get the right size...
1 ~ In the "Image" menu, select Resize
2 ~ On the left side, 2 boxes down, you'll see "New Size" with 2 values... "Width" and "Height"... Enter 640 in the box with the highest number
3 ~ Click "OK"
Now comes the hard part... Saving it as an image under 150k
1 ~ From the "File" menu, select "Save As"...
2 ~ Click "Options"
3 ~ Select the JPG tab at the top...
4 ~ For "Save Quality", select 100 %
5 ~ Click "OK" and then "Save"
6 ~ Look at the size of the photo using your OS (Windows explore if you use windows)... If it is above 150k, do steps 1 through 5 again but use a lower number in step 4... Continue doing this till you find the closest range to 150k
7 ~ Enjoy the much higher scores you'll be getting since everyone will be able to see your picture as you intended :)

One thing to remember is that computer monitors display ONLY 72 dpi, so if you are saving your image at more than that, it is just wasted dpi and an increased file size. |

dpi has nothing to do with displaying on monitors or file size..
If the pic is 640x640, it's that size on your sceen for any dpi. and the compression levels will depend only on this pixel size, no matter which dpi it is..
And on a side, note, monitors dont even have 72 dpi anymore, since that will depend what resolution you're at. 72 at one time WAS the resolution of monitors, but if you calculate it now, it's probably far from reality. If i set my 19 inch monitor (which is 14.5 inches wide) to 1600x1200, my horizontal "dpi" is about 110.
just a little clarification :)

I usae irfanview to scan through images to halp select one to then use photoshop to edit you can use the scroll function on a mouse to flip through pics very quickly it's a heck of a lot faster than windows imaging software or loading images through photoshop. yeah 72 dpi is pretty bad for current monitors I have a sub $200 19" montor and get 132 dpi on the highest resolution mode but I stay at 1600X1200 so it doesn't mess my eyes up. |
