I too am of Indian origin, have visited the country tens of times and all of my family do indeed have in their homes bathrooms with water taps and plastic mugs next to the toilet for use to clean oneself after. This also applies in many top hotels that I have also stayed in though in the main part these hotels also offer toilet paper so that visitors have the choice.
The fact that many have switched to toilet paper in India does not invalidate Frisca's point that people in India to indeed use water. |
Indeed we in india use water. And I felt Frisca's has merely sited a fact. Whether she is from indian origin or not does not matter, a fact is a fact.
On the fun part, I was born in a village, and stayed there for starting some years. We did not have toilets those times. So we used to go to fields for 'doing' it.
So we (me and my cousins) (we were kids that time) used to go together. With our own buckets, it was more like a social gathering. It was fun though, 'doing' it together.

If I were with my cousins they'd find a way to bring me home naked in front of everyone.
D=
Now that I think about it, maybe water would be cleaner.
I mean.. It's almost like bathing.
Seems more thurough than just wiping it with a tissue.
I still think I'll stick with the paper though.
My mother hates me enough as it is.

Frisca...
Please don't generalise on a country which you know very little or nothing about and its bad taste IMO. |
PARDON ME?!! My family originates from India. I've visited there enough to know what MY experiences were at the dozens of family homes I visited while there. Now who is generalizing and responding in poor taste? You make assumptions, I never did.
Edited to add: I truly appreciate the comments responding to you in this thread before I did. That your family may have switched to toilet paper doesn't negate the experiences I, or anyone else visiting or living in India has. I make no judgments about what the practices are in India. In fact, I find them to be sensible and environmentally friendly.
Also, to zxaar - going in the "fields" was common practice in my mother's village too. They used to take two bricks with them to crouch on. Not sure if they went in groups though I wouldn't be surprised!

I am really happy that you think it's sensible..and you have visited families that use water rather than toilet papers..but if you revisit your original post, you will see that you had no idea how *they* dry off and you think that's why *they* use multiple layers of clothing.
When I refered to generalising I meant what you indicated by this comment.People in India don't roam around with their clothes wet, specially that area :).
I am saying again..the post showed ignorance.
If you pretended to be ignorant without being actually so, then you led me to assume that you are.Talking about assumtion, I have never said that my family have switched from water to toilet paper..so you assumed something which is not true and I never once indicated that it is the case.
I don't have anything against you personally, but your post somehow seemed to be looking down upon a certain behaviour of a community. You have clarified in your previous post that it is not the case, so my work is done here.
Edit to add:
Clarification to the other posters who think that by Generalising, I meant using water as a practice, I did not ( I know that it is a fact and it has its pros and cons)...I refered to the indication that people dont dry off.

Abhinaba it was VERY VERY VERY VERY obvious that the comment about drying off was a JOKE, some gentle humour and very tongue in cheek! If you are unable to detect that this was said in humour you're going to misinterpret one heck of a lot of posts around here!

I use toilet paper. therefore, i am not in the group that uses water. therefore, when I speak about peoples who use water, I cannot use we, so I use they. that's all I meant by the use of that pronoun.
with respect to how people dry off...it was MEANT TO BE FUNNY. I think its funny, it makes my gramma laugh, so I figured I'd share. There is a smilie there to indicate the joke. You take offense where none can reasonably be extracted.
Your opinion about what I think is sensible, with all due respect, is meaningless to me, as you chose to attack me in a public forum rather than simply addressing me in private regarding your (mis)interpretation of my brief and (what i thought was) humourous post.
You are right, I did say that your family switched to paper. I apologise for making that assumption, right or wrong. I appreciate your vigilance in patroling the forums, but I assure you, I'm the last person you need to police regarding insulting any group of people. What you took offense at was not at all clear until your last post, and you chose to make a very personal attack on me when what you really should have said was that you took offence at my joke regarding how people dry off when they use water to clean themselves. I would never look down on my cousins, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters in India, and nothing in my posts would ever suggest anything but a factual assertion followed by a tongue in cheek remark meant purely in humour.
And, i will defer if you have any expertise in this area: how DO folks dry off when using water? No one is my family is willing to tell me.
All this to say "it was a joke. let it go and lets be friends" |

I think the best joke on Sheryl Crows comment was made by her son. His comment about rinsing and reusing sounds like it̢۪s dripping with sarcasm..

Get over it.
You messed up and called someone out when you shouldn't have.
Trying to rationalize it doesn't do anything for your credibility. |

Again, I think this is not the right place to make that joke where very few people will know what the fact is..anyway, that's my opinion.
I don't have the time or intention to patroll the forums..it just caught my eye and I expressed my opinion.
Anyway, as people say "lets agree to disagree" and be friends.
To your question, the practice(I am not saying everyone does it) is to go before your bathing time or have a bath after you go. As you have more than 8 months of summer almost all over, it does not hurt to have an extra bath sometimes. If you talk about workplaces, they normally have toilet papers. I know there are a few *what if*'s coming to your mind..that is why people are switching to toilet paper to cope up with the pace of modern society.
IMO, the best way to do it is use water to clean up and wipe it off with the paper..I do it that way (I am in Wisconsin, US and I can't afford to take a second bath in the day when the temperature is below 0F..which is often here :) )
I can tell you its better than either of the two processes. |
