Even though I'd read about that today I didnt' make the connection. It reminds me about the Ayatollah Khomeini. He published a book about how to live a humble religious life. An excerp: "A single pebble is sufficent with which to wipe the anus."

Yuck.

Okay..
Hippies: feel free to kill me for saying this, but I'd rather have a clean arse than a tree in my backyard..
Fields aren't so bad.
You can plant corn in them..
Or something..
An anal infection would be an awful way to go.

Please don't generalise on a country which you know very little or nothing about and its bad taste IMO.

Oh my goodness that would be awful! You could just do as her brother suggests and wash it out and reuse! I'm not really sure what kind of toilet paper they were using though..cause most of the toilet paper I have seen falls apart if it gets really wet.

But she is more or less correct. In india we do use water to wash it. And I feel it is the best way, instead of just wiping it out (which I feel does not clean it enough). And yes, indians do wash their hands well after it (at least I believe so).

this thread instantly brought the age old question to mind:

How does a blind person know they're done wipeing?

While I do agree more needs to be done I really don't think 1 sheet has to be the answer. [quote:from article]...She and environmental activist Laurie David toured 11 university campuses to persuade students to act to help safeguard the world's environment. [/quote]

How much pollution is she creating by touring 11 different campuses pushing ways to help safeguard the environment? Seems counter-productive if you ask me. But maybe they walk everywhere...who knows.

edit to ponder question...what research did she conduct to come to this conclusion...never mind I don't want to know -_-

Reminds me of a humor contest in our newspaper to come up with spectacularly bad advice.

One of the winners: "leaves of three, good TP."

For those of you now scratching your heads, poison ivy has three leaves and is easily avoided by following the advice "leaves of three, let it be."

I was actually hoping they would answer that in the movie.

Considering her parents are *from* India, and she's traveled there many times, I'm pretty sure she knows more than "very little or nothing" about the country. Perhaps instead of coming to conclusions and accusing someone of something, you could try learning a bit about them through a private message or two.. hmm?

Perhaps you should have refrained from assuming that I was totally in dark abt that..as going through her profile gives a fare idea about that and I put my comment being fully aware of her being associated with India somehow.

Anyway, I have not *accused* her of anything..in my opinion, a comment like that to the behaviour of a community shows ignorance and disrespect. And if you think visiting someplace a couple of times or being from a specific origin gives someone the authority of knowledge to say what he/she likes about them, I beg to differ.

All I'm saying is that it would have been a better idea to take it up with her in person.
However, I should have taken my own advice and done the same with you. My apologies on that point.

The edutainment value of DPC never ceases to amaze.

Um, would you believe biodegradable bandanas?

On the Sheryl Crow thing - I heard she was ranting today about how Karl Rove was rude to her and would not talk to her about global warming at a press club dinner event. (Allegedly) He walked away from her and she put her hand on his shoulder and he swung around and said "don't touch me!" - he must've read her TP best practices blog.

Well, I tried to do my bit for the environment by giving up using paper completely. But after a week of using the toilet brush, I found that paper is the better. ;-)

What you have done is accused her of generalising about a country she knows little or nothing about. Since she knows quite a lot about India and what she has said is accurate where is the disrespect or ignorance?

I too am of Indian origin, have visited the country tens of times and all of my family do indeed have in their homes bathrooms with water taps and plastic mugs next to the toilet for use to clean oneself after. This also applies in many top hotels that I have also stayed in though in the main part these hotels also offer toilet paper so that visitors have the choice.

The fact that many have switched to toilet paper in India does not invalidate Frisca's point that people in India to indeed use water.

Seems they use water in Japan also. Perhaps Sheryl thinks we should all get $5000 remote-control toilets: //www.washlet.com/default.asp
