I did a search for similar topics, but only found threads from a year back, and only talking about separating the Free Study into themes or topics, which seemed to reach the consensus that it would be too much work, or too unwieldy, which I agree with.
What I propose is to separate the Free Studies into the four editing rulesets each month. One for Minimal, one for Basic, one for Advanced, and one for Expert.
You can then only enter one of these Free Studies each month, depending on your preference for editing.
I believe this would spread out the number of entries in this category (as almost 600 entries is simply TOO MANY), into the four groups, making it much more manageable.
It is clear something needs to be done. This is my suggestion. |

Has my vote. I know this months free-study (april) is going to be an all-out advanced editing fest, far removed from a true photography challenge. |

Rarely agree with your opinion, Artyste, but this idea is spot-on.
I wasn't really happy with the outcome of the expert editing challenges at all.

I'll cast another vote in favor of the idea.
And if four is too many, maybe at least two - basic and expert? |

That'll be one scrollerific front page when the results post. I'm just picturing, in the best case, seven challenges listed in the results section.

Ah, but think of the money the guys who make scroll-wheel mice will make when that happens. :-) |

well... nothing says that all four rulesets are needed each month. maybe a basic and advanced one month, and basic expert the following, and then minimal and expert... |

It seems the basis for dividing Free Studies is that the number of entries is too unwieldy and time consuming to vote on? If you don't have time to vote on all the entries, that's fine, just vote on 20%....
20% of 600 entries is only 120 votes. |

I totally agree with the splitting it into the 4 types of editing. That gives everyone a fair chance in their categories. Too many times the minimal editing photos are last place as the flashier higher edited photos take the top spots.
There could be a special section for free study.. let the blue ribbon winners be in line on the front page with links to the rest
I for one quit voting free study as it didn't seem fair to only vote for 20%

Ahhh. This is probably the real concern, no?
This is a matter of voter preference. Under this logic, what is being proposed is akin to saying Minimal Editing shots can't be as good as Advanced or Expert shots.

I'm not sure why anyone would feel that way. Statistically, it makes virtually no difference. People can be comfortable with this because they know that their score rarely changes by much after 100 votes, and even less after 150 votes.
It's important for everyone to realize that while voting on all the entries is a wonderful idea, it's not necessary for your votes to count and you shouldn't feel bad if you can't vote on more than 20%.

So you're saying that we should only vote on 20%. ok, I can do that...so so i choose from the thumbnails which ones to vote on?? or do i get fed up when I get stuck voting on all the out of focus ones?? I then QUIT voting all together because i get fed up with that... don't end up voting all 20%... and then my votes get shit canned as I didn't make the 20%
As for the minimal editing to basic editing and the new expert editing.. there are people who prefer to do their photos like that, and are penalized as the free studies are expert editing.

in theory everyone should start voting from the first one they see, and keep voting until they lose steam (which ideally is after the 20% point). each person has the photos arranged in a random order, so even if everyone only votes on ~1/3 of them, all photos will get plenty of votes. any sort of screening based upon thumbnails or titles skews the process. |

Yup it does... but I have started at the top... from the beginning and gotten all the out of focus photos...got tired and when you are stuck voting on those and have to vote for 150+... you get tired real fast of voting on them, and don't give the other photos a fair chance for a vote. By putting them in the separate categories... you then can vote the section you like, or all of the sections and SEE each of the photos and vote on all of them.

I agree with asimchoudri, I always start from the top and try to vote on all of them. I don't look at the thumbs because I don't want to base anything on those as sometimes there are hidden jewels which the thumbs don't show, besides the way I see it if someone took the time to enter a shot if I can I should take the time to vote based on the actual picture not the thumb. Free Studies with 500 or more images are hard to vote on time wise but I love the vairety of images in these challenges and really look forward to voting on them.
