OK, last week I managed to be in the top 50% with just a candid shot of someone eating a hotdog, this week I actually staged the shot and thought it was rather cool. I used a SINGLE strobe light and a long shutter speed to capture the effect.

Here is the before shot:

and the after:

//www.dpchallenge.com/image.asp?IMAGE_ID=7379 (Demon child)

Most the votes were 4's although I think those who really looked at it and 'got it' gave higher marks, there was even one 10!

So what gives? Is this really that bad of a shot?

Well, I think it's a cool idea, but here's the histogram of your photo, taken from the gimp:

Here is just one link I've found that you can read to understand this concept.

I think it may have been because she looks sickly or beat-up. It looks pretty repulsive if you don't know what it's supposed to be. I know I didn't realize it was a skull until I read your description.

The colours in your photo should have a histogram that spans the whole range, so it varies from the darkest to the lightest possible tones. This makes sure that the level of brightness and contrast in the image is optimal. You can manipulate the levels to get exactly the effect you want, but the histogram you have DEFINITELY needs to be improved on.

While this is true in general, I don't know that it really holds for
this particular entry, as it is a really dark, moody, low key sort
of shot.

I'll confess, I couldn't figure out what kind of lighting would make it look like a double exposure. Knew it wasn't, just couldn't figure it out.

Well, from playing with it myself, the result from just an auto levels is too stark, but I've gotten some really interesting variations by tweaking the levels in this photo in different ways.

So my thoughts on this are correct, most people didn't 'see' the skull so they gave it a low rating as being just a strange photo.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll try to make my subject more clear in future shots.

I too gave it a low score and I admit that I couldn't tell what effect was used to create the photo. However, knowing the effect or not isn't really relevant because it still needs to be a good photo in the end and unfortunately the photo just didn't do a thing for me. If you want people to appreciate a fairly gruesome looking image then something very striking needs to be done either compositionally or with the values. It is a very interesting idea though, now that I know how you did it.

I think that's part of it, but I also feel a lot like Tim -- it was gruesome enough to create a negative feeling, but not so severe (by today's standards) to really stand out...
