Nothing wrong with the forum the way it's setup now, and being a noob here I hate to ask for changes, but I was wondering if DPC would ever consider changing to php B.B. forum. Nicer, cleaner, more options for mods etc. Or is there something about how it's setup now here that keeps DPC from making a switch?

...Or maybe there's not really anything wrong with it as it is...?

The fact that phpBB sucks? :)

I like it when you don't have to look too far to find the answer to a question : )

Hi Heavyj,

We tend to like the look of the forums here, but if you use Firefox and want to see what modifications have already been made you can read all about them here. :)

There is nothing wrong with the forum meaning it works fine. BUT there's nothing wrong with upgrading to something that my turn out to be better. I have modded on phpbb forums and like the way they look, feel and run. That's why I asked. Perhaps there's something about this forum that I'm not seeing that works here but wouldn't on phpbb.

Or perhaps the better question would be can we have feature x, y, or z?

I vote for z. And more than one of them. Yes, I would like feature zzzzzzzzz.

phpBB has frequent security issues and updates, and we have avoided it for that reason.

Are there any specific updates you'd like to see? It's possible we can work them into our update queue.

While there are always upgrades, you don't have to. You simply add the mod that you don't want it to remind you that there is a newer version.

A few features I liked on the phpbb forums (Some more than others, no particular order here)

- PM boxes
- Chat option
- Polls
- Post count (This is sometimes good to show how active a member is)
- sub-forums
- Forum notification (To be notified by email if someone has replied to your forum)
- Forum subscription (To be updated of a forum you've participated in)
- Games (Which aren't all that important really, but when waiting for a reply to your post can make time go by a bit faster)
- Recent topics (Displayed on the front to show what new topics have been posted)
- Popular topics by reply (Same as the above mod, but will show a link of the top 5/10 most popular topics by reply)
- Popular topics by view (Good for noobs to find the stuff they need when starting out. Again, shown on the top page)
- Cards (Kinda like soccer. You get 1 yellow for doing something stupid. Another for being stupid again. The third is a red carb meaning you're banned. Very effective for keeping SOME in line...seeing that yellow card beside your name can sometimes remind you to NOT go overboard on flamming)
- Quick reply

These are just some of the MANY that I think would make things work nicely. There are plenty of 'cosmetic' mods that would making browsing the forum fun as well.

Let me just say that I am not actually say you SHOULD change. If there are features that can't be brought into phpbb that are necessary, then hey...don't bother. I'm just wondering if there was ever any thought put into it, and if not, why not. Just curious.

My concern is that many of the updates are security-related, and that not applying them on a timely basis leaves the site open to compromise. I am a moderator on PhishTank, and can tell you, based on my observations there, that many phishing sites are hosted on servers compromised via unpatched phpBB vulnerabilities.

I'll address these point by point...

- PM boxes

For privacy and storage reasons, we prefer to have PM's delivered to the recipient by email. This was, as far as I know, a conscious design decision.

- Chat option

We do not have the time and resources available to maintain, support and moderate an official chat site within DPC; however, there is an unofficial chat room, DPC Fanatics, which is hosted by Manic.

- Polls

There has been discussion of this feature, and at this time our opinion is that a polling feature within the forums would not be especially beneficial.

- Post count (This is sometimes good to show how active a member is)

This exists within users' profiles. Adding it to the forums would be easy enough; my only concern would be people spamming threads or thread-jacking to run up their post counts -- I've seen this phenomenon on other forums.

- sub-forums

Like this, or do you mean something different? If you mean something different, could you please explain this in more detail?

- Forum notification (To be notified by email if someone has replied to your forum)
- Forum subscription (To be updated of a forum you've participated in)

These features are already available to paid members.

- Games (Which aren't all that important really, but when waiting for a reply to your post can make time go by a bit faster)

How about these games? We could always use more votes and especially comments. The Critique Club could use some help, too!

Interesting ideas... I'd guess these could probably be implemented easily enough within our existing code.

- Quick reply

Can you explain this feature?

Again, the main concern was security.

the only thing I'd like to see changed is to be able to see a list of topics, started by you or another member of the site.

for the rest? go take pictures. site's good as it is, why would we need another chatroom, and lots of bling bling.. why change a winner?!

The quick reply feature is where, instead of hitting the 'reply' button, there is a box ready to type beneath the last post. You type and hit the 'quick reply' and it posts your message. Good for posting something 'quick'

I've never had security issues with forums I've been on. Luck perhaps. As far as the rest of the features, like I said, just ideas. I know there are plenty more. Since I have time on my hands maybe I'll spend the next couple of weeks playing around with a forum and then post the link (Or PM it to mods) to take a look at....

I haven't been on DCP that long, and I'm not one to complain (Can't stress this enough). I've just never been on a forum like this one. Vbulletin and phpbb are what I am used to. Just thought I would ask.

It's just a suggestiong. No need to change things. Just a suggestion. Perhaps there are some phpbb features that some would like to see.

Despite your experience with this particular issue, note that many changes to the site do occur in response to user suggestions -- we have an entire Forum section devoted to the topic, with more than 2400 threads.

However, it's usually a pretty slow process to incorporate any substantial changes.

As a PHP developer, site administrator (commercial and personal), and semi-former (e.g. not much time to contribute) Gallery lead and developer who frequently worked with the phpBB code, and a many, many year user of internet bulletin boards, I've never found it a particularly appealing piece of software.

Nothing against its authors, but it has had frequent, serious security issues which make sites running it a target for script kiddies.

I've frequently found that many of its features are not used on a regular basis by most users or are otherwise completely superfluous.

Integrating it with this site would require a _lot_ of custom reworking of the phpBB code which would have to be maintained and updated through every phpBB release. The BBCode would have to be updated to handle DPC's custom tags, registration would have to be subverted and userlists would need to be pulled directly from DPC, etc. It's not a task to be taken lightly at all.

Finally, it's much easier to enhance the forums that D&L have already developed to add any user-requested features than it is to adopt phpBB, force everyone to re-learn, to add any user-requested features to phpBB, etc..
