My backyard.. I live on a sailboat
03/01/2007 01:05:48 PM · #1277

One of the homes built by my ancestor Capt. F A Hendry, who moved to Florida in about 1855 from Ga. He was quite a character, and was very involved in the history of the area and state during the time just before the Civil War until his death in 1917. He had about 36,000 cattle, and a citrus grove for which he built a water wheel on the river here to pump irrigation water. He was also active in the war, with a loosely organized milita which was called the "Cattle Calvary" and he was in charge of the southern-most battle of the Civil War, the "Battle of Gopher Ridge" which they won easily, though greatly out numbered. He scattered his men thru the area of the battle with instructions to make small fires at night, and to fire their repeating rifles as if there were many of them. The Union troops, feeling that they were out gunned pulled back with no major engagment, and with no injury or death to either side. Actually everyone won that battle. The local county bears his name, and he was involved with creation of the county that Hendry County was created from, Lee county. There are writings penned by him in the Fl Archives, and many more articles if you "Google" " F A Hendry"
His daughter Laura, was married to my great grandfather, Waddy Thompson. Capt Hendry named LaBelle after his two daughters Laura and Belle. My great grandafather died when my grandfather was young, and Capt Hendry raised my grandfather in his home in Fort Myers.
The house is on the national register of historic places and was built in 1914. It is now restored, and is comunity property, and used for local events and gatherings.
Maybe I will post tomorrow about the other pioneer side of my family, who settled on the coast, and about as far south as you can go on mainland Florida, Chokoloskee Island, and Everglades City.
A rose bloomed on the side of a tree in my yard today, so some green for the snowbound people.
And, since the usual super sunset fizzed out, I had to make do with the moon and a buzzard.

Are you?
I know I'm a week behind, but that doesn't matter.
Does it?

I was thinking a triptych a week project would be good.
I think a triptych a day would be too much, but one a week for two months?

what do you think?

I was thinking of suggesting "colors of the season", but that probably wouldn't work for a lot of people yet. I am so tired of grey and brown! It could even be simply "colorful", just so it is bright and cheerful!

Day 29 - Untitled

A tree in a field near where I work. I hope for sunshine tomorrow to get a shot of my building, but if not, I'll have to use one from last autumn (the only time I'll have done that in the project). It's just too pretty on the whole not to show it off at least once.

I took this shot for the tree challenge, but as I went to submit saw the "minimal" rules; I had shot in RAW without the JPG (something I no longer do; I now shoot in both formats), so I couldn't enter, and it was the last night of the challenge, so that was that. The sky is "natural" (ie, it was brightly overcast, which made the sky pretty much a bright white). I like the effect.

I played with these shots (I had a few), so here are two outtakes (they mostly differ in cropping and composition):

Looking forward to whatever comes next, I've enjoyed this a lot, and really appreciate the comments and the advice and help, and had a great time seeing where everyone lives and what interests them about their local areas. I'm glad I joined in, thanks for having me (and especially for putting up with my constant whining that I wasn't happy with whatever shot I was putting up for that night).

I'm off to comment for a bit, and expect to do a lot of comments (to catch up to the people who were so kind with their time to me) over the weekend.

Ok, still trying to catch up. This is an older one from my portfolio, but I'll use it for day 27.

And for Day 28, another fountain. I really need to get out there and finish this up with a good shot for day 30, huh? :)

Ok, this is for Day 28, it has been in my portfolio since December but I really like this old house and think its quite typical of country homes in rural Ontario so I am going to post it here. Tried to get one per day but its snowing very hard tonight and I can't really get out don't want to carry this February challenge over to far into March. This was a great month and a really fun project!

I know there is a discussion regarding a minimal editing side tournament, which I think is really cool. As to a triptych side challenge, that could be interesting. It would definitely get people thinking way in advance of what they are trying to convey. It is always good to be brain challenged as well as eye challenged.
