Kinda what happened to the Titanic, I think, and look what it got them! I think we miss many great photo ops, and really powerful photos when we look at ordinary things and refuse to see beyond the obvious. the result is common, ordinary pictures.

I think it can be applied to art and photography in general. I think it means going from the obvious, visual information to your internal vision and creativity. In photograpghy it could mean seeing things in very creative ways and capturing those images in film and in art it could mean starting with an idea and running with it and making your own creation from it. You are building on something real to make it extaordinary.

John, since you bring it up, I think it could apply to both. As a viewer, I can look at picture and think "[insert choice emotion here]" and move on. BUT, if I stop to take a closer look, to look beyond the obvious adn try to see it through the photographer's eyes, I may see another whole level open up to me that I would have missed, had I not dwelled on it.

I think, as a happy medium, the photographer should take pictures of the tip of the iceberg, that make the viewer want to go under the water adn see what all is there.
