I took a common acronym on here and put my own spin on it. Ain't that allowed? |

As evidenced by my DNMC post a few minutes ago, some people don't read the notes. That's part of what makes it a challenge. |

if your entry is successful in this challenge - no one should have to look its' title up in google...

What occured to me in voting was how many people shot an image and used an acronym for the title, but the image doesn't support the acronym, or help to explain it or describe it. Its as if the image and title are disconnected entirely.
Still some awesome creative shots and fun challenge to vote / comment through.

I felt that way too whilst voting. It was more like some people shot a photo and then brewed an acronym around it. (just like the hate challenge)

I was only joking about the "google it" thing.
But some voters clearly dont know the meaning of some of the acronyms, so maybe they should google it.

Thank You!
I think sometimes people get caught up in their creativity and forget that you have to communicate to us voters as well...
I notice that the ribbon winners , generally have found a way to do both :) |

And some of us just enjoy taking an acronym and putting our own (photo-related) spin on it! More than a few entries are simply words, not acronyms, made into rather creative acronyms. I enjoy them. |

What Elvis said. My entry is pretty straightforward so I don't think I'll have any DNMC comments, but there are many titles of entries where I'm left saying "WTF?" I just assume it's an acronym that has a relation to the photo, and give it a score based on the merit of the photo, not on the title. |

Well, here's what it said in the notes for Acronym:
Title your image with your chosen acronym, and let your image explain what the letters represent.
Nothin' about not making your own acronym!

Also nothing about explaining the acronym in the title. |

Maybe SC should have done what they did with that song title challenge , where they link to an agreed upon list of acronyms...just a thought |

YMMV. People still complained about not recognizing the song. |

but part of the challenge was to decrypt the title via the photograph. the photo can have oodles of merit and still not be successful in this challenge - as the title is - based on the description supposed to become obvious by looking at the photo.

Everyone has different realms of experience and acronyms can have multiple meanings. Let's say I took a picture of a horse and titled it TB. I don't mean tuberculosis, I mean Thoroughbred. And having just finished voting on all the entries I can rest assured than mine is not the only entry where the acronym is explained.
Anyway, I originally came to this site to learn how to take better photos, and have fun doing it and get useful criticques so I can improve. If an entry gets kicked to the curb, so be it.

To be honest that's just what I did. So I deserve my 4.7. Oh well... this isn't the first time I shot first then found a challenge to put it in. What was I thinking?

And nothing about taking a word and making it an acronym just because it fits your image.
I'm taking the trouble of looking up the acronyms on Google so if I cannot find it on let's say, 2 acronym sites then chances are it is just something made up and I lost my time looking up for it. For that I think it is fair to penalize the image. That being said, I will not bring down a good image just because of that - maybe I will take 1 point.
In the same time, I had someone shouting DNMC at my acronym even though it is a valid one found on all acronyms sites, can be deducted from the actual sound of the words (like "r u" instead of "are you") and used quite often on the Internet. |

Ugh ... started off strong when I went to bed last night - 4 votes and around a 7 average. Woke up to 20 votes and a 5.3xxx. Ack!
I think there's too much debate around this one: acronym versus abbreviation versus initials and whether the image is supposed to represent a givne acronym literally -- for example, RTFM (read the "freaking" manul for those who don't know it and refuse to look it up!) would only be valid to many voters if the image was of someone actually reading a user's/owner's manual ... as opposed to something more creative, like a guy building something with a perplexed/confused look, lots of seemingly spare parts and no instructions in sight.
This is going to be a depressing week.

Here's the "beauty" of this site and this challenge in particular!!!
It is so diverse and people take things, images and challenges, in such a variety of ways it's (quite often) impossible to predict.
In this ACRONYM challenge, we see all sort titles: extremely common overused acronyms, normal knwon acronyms, obscure acronyms, total unknown acronyms, made up acronyms, explained acronyms, etc. Yet it seems we all have a beef against one or another - myself included :).
So, how am I voting? Well, first I was voting only on those acronyms I know, but I should assume all submiters are intelligent enough, and that must something meaningful behind every acronym , regardless if I get it or not.
If I simply skip an image, I am either favoring it (if is a bad image) or defrauding it (if is a good image), and that wouldn't be fair. Therefore, I decided to vote on the image regardless its title - if I get the acronym certainly it will be more fun...
