Just finished voting in this challenge. When unable to find a real explanation on a bunch of images, was forced to make a SWAG. If, after research and contemplation, I continued to not understand the relationship between the acronym title and the image, I had to admit that... GIDK.

Some very good images that fulfilled the challenge really well. But, quite a lot of communication failures in this challenge... connection and communication was the point of the challenge, I think. And, it appears that many disgruntled participants are retaliating with a DPC version of MAD.

hmmm, more have looked than voted, maybe they think there is no relation. I put a lot of thought into my photo though. I'm buying a new lens today!!! Anything to help my photos look better. :)

Hi all,

I have the feeling that very few are doing the right thing in their presentation....

They create letters with no descriptions.....

To me its not what this challenge is all about...

A acronym is something that you can prononced... ex: NATO.... KYOTO... LOL... AWOL... GOLF....

You are mistaken. An acronym need not be a pronounced word.
From Wikipedia:
Acronyms: Acronyms and initialisms are abbreviations, such as NATO, laser, and IBM, that are formed using the initial letters of words or word parts in a phrase or name. Acronyms and initialisms are usually pronounced in a way that is distinct from that of the full forms for which they stand: as the names of the individual letters (as in IBM), as a word (as in NATO), or as a combination (as in IUPAC).

There is sharp disagreement on the difference in meaning between the terms acronym and initialism; see the "Nomenclature" section below. Another term, alphabetism, is sometimes used to describe abbreviations pronounced as the names of letters.

I took a risk, tried something new, and now I'm paying. Note to self: voters don't like this different thing.

With all due respect, I think he (Simpa) was not out-of-line with his description of an acronym. From //encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com (underlining added by me for emphasis).

"Initialism originally referred to abbreviations formed from initials, without reference to pronunciation, but during the middle portion of the twentieth century, the word acronym was coined, but only for those abbreviations that are actually pronounced as words, like NATO or AIDS.

Of the words, acronym is the much more frequently used and known; and many use it erroneously to describe any abbreviation formed from initial letters."

Hey everyone. I broke the rules with my entry...

[thumb]473896[/thumb]

... but not on purpose. Only AFTER I posted did I realize that my picture was "expertly edited." Yes, by me! I know, shocking. I never thought I would have an expert anything. So, for those who did see my shot before the disqual, thanks for all of the great comments. This is by far my best showing, despite the circumstances. I was really aiming to simply share this pic with all of you, so I hope you will leave some feedback on my profile, and I will treat it as the same as if it actually made it into the challenge. Thanks in advance!

For the purposes of this contest, he is. Acronyms need not be a pronounced word. From the challenge description: An acronym is a word created from the initials of words in a phrase, such as... DPC (Digital Photography Challenge).

I guess the thumb didn't show up. Whoops, another error by yours truly. The entry of which I was speaking is titled USMC for obvious reasons. My thanks to my model, Mike (yes, a REAL Marine). A great guy and patriot.

You are correct. The challenge description does specifically lay out the definition of an acronym for purposes of the challenge.

I may have worded my response incorrectly as I was mostly countering idnic's post where she used the definition from an outside source, and that is not the ONLY source for the origin/definition of what an acronym is. There are conflicting views in the world outside of DPC as to what is/isn't an acronym, so Simpa could be correct in his viewpoint (although not for the purpose of this challenge). :D

I stand corrected.... sorta lol

I actually chose the wikipedia definition because it supports the challenge description; but yes, both definitions are correct. :)

Lots of comments...mainly saying they don't know the acronym.

It's the last time I shoehorn an entry.

Not till next week anyway ;~)
