Out of curiosity, I checked to see what percentage of my comments were deemed helpful. I rated 68.9% helpful.
Anybody else interested in posting?

How nice - 71.8% deemed helpful - that's good because I do TRY! I find I learn the most from making comments, and reading others.

Minus the one comment I made to myself...77%. Then again I haven't left that many comments.

Yikes, just 53.4% of my comments were deemed to be helpful to others. A very disappointing and embarrassing result for me. I promise all that I will work to be better in the future.

I mark 100% of the comments offered on my submissions to be helpful. Yes, even the not so nice comments. If someone takes the time to comment, then I feel that I should say, thank you for the effort, by checking the box. I welcome and appreciate all comments.

It is my habit to only leave positive comments and not to unduly critique creative works. I see very little value in negative comments; it certainly is not educational.

I'm at 38.5% useful. That's out of 1850+ Comments.
Those of us who were commenting before the release of v2 have a disadvantage though, cause a LOT of people never went back and marked old critiques useful.
Which reminds me. If you haven't done so, Go back and mark old critique useful!! It would be greatly appreciated. :)

I'm running at about 400 out of 700 comments deemed helpful. I'm more proud of the statistic "700 comments for 1400 votes" - anyone else want to compare this stat?
06/26/2003 07:03:04 PM · #7
commented on 17% of photos I voted on, of which 69% were helpful.

Excellent stat! I'm at 1858 comments out of 2938 votes I've given. I've commented on 63.2% of the shots I've voted on.

I'm at a meager 44% helpful, but I'm with Heather, I've been here since august before comments were helpful or not. I've left almost 2400 comments. I used to leave tons of comments. Leaving a lot of comments looks good for leaving a lot of comments. But leaving 20-30 comments a challenge, I think the comments I am leaving can do the most good. Normally, if I leave a comment, I'm really trying to help. Whether I'm actually helping or not... who knows?

Bob - I've been here since May last year (even earlier I had a different account but slipped away for a while before purchasing my first digital camera). The good old days - when you could easily vote on every submission.

I think another interesting stat is "comments received" versus "comments given". Unfortunately I give 10 comments for every 1 received, but I must admit I sometimes vote on challenges I haven't entered and also CC challenges I'm not even eligible for (ie: I'm not a member). I'm not complaining though because I find that commenting on photo's really helps me understand what I like or dislike about a particular photo.

I have about 600 comments received vs. 2400 or so given. I've also cast 500 or so more votes than I've received. If I skip a challenge or 2 voting, I'm sure I'll be forgiven. I try to at least vote on the minimum.

It just takes up too much time to make meaning full comments so many photos. And you will never get 100%, since I noticed a number of people that I have commented on don't mark any comments usefull.

Wow, I've made comments on 31% of the photos I've voted on, and only 45% are marked helpfull. :( I'm pretty blunt most of the time so maybe that's why helpfull is so low, although I make just as many positive (praise) comments as I do "negative" comments. I usually never leave "one liner" comments either.

I'm at 24% helpful. I think I'll just shut up in future....

50% But, I have only made 30 comments. Still feeling like I don't have the knowledge to comment or critique. I am making an effort, though.
While we're on stats, is it Sunday evening that they get updated?
The 4.4 I'm giving on average votes, doesn't seem to be current. I haven't been giving lower than 3's and I've been giving lots of 6 and ups.

% helpful and comments marked helpful are generally meaningless stats to me because criticism is often not marked helpful while most "nice shot, you did well with x thing" is.

As an example to pick on, look at Sylandrix' pic in Black on Black.

There's a strange border to this pic - is it intentional?
Photographer found comment helpful.

Except for the lighter colored black addition, this looks good. Actually it looks like my gf, really.
(Photographer did not find helpful)

What's the difference in the comments? Mine says "don't do this L shaped border." The other says "There is a strange border, why did you do this?"

Some people NEVER mark it. Some people ALWAYS mark it. It's fun, but meaningless. I'm at 65% helpful and I comment on 25% of my votes.

It almost seems like there could be two checkboxes:

[ ] Thanks for taking the time to comment! [ ] I found this comment helpful

Do people take it personally if the photographer doesn't mark a comment like "nice shot!" as being "helpful"? It would be nice to acknowledge people taking the time to comment, but at the same time show which are truly "helpful".

helpful adj 1: providing assistance or serving a useful function 2: of service or assistance 3: showing a willingness to cooperate

Unless they are positively unhelpful or not remotely constructive I mark them as helpful.... some are helpful in regard to the execution and some are simply helpful for my ego..... either way I can take something out of most comments.

Some though are just plain irrelevant or so subjective as to be not bothered with.....

But to get back on topic, I'm running at about 63% helpful....

I`m about 45% helpful.
I mark all i receive helpful because comments are sometimes very few and far between. I think that if someone has bothered to leave a comment it`s worth some acknowledgement even if its a "great shot" comment.
What i like best though is when someone replies to say thanks for a comment i have left.
