I have recently made over 1000 unhelpful comments, and I'd like to celebrate by posting some of them here. Just to be fair, these are all on photos where other comments *were* marked helpful. I mean ONE THOUSAND unhelpful comments. Can anyone beat that?
fascinating. this strikes me as a psychological allegory, as though the child in the background is the child he never had a chance to be.
I like how the horses seem to be interwoven, overlapping, and I like the textures.
nice silhouette.
interesting and original.
It doesn't seem to exactly meet the challenge, but it is a brilliant photo and it is at least aware of the challenge.
I love how fake this looks. Great effect.
well done.
oh, you mean nuts is the same word as nuts? Who'da thunk it? A lot of people, actually. If you want funny, you gotta surprise a little.
very creative take on the wrong challenge...
pretty and Minimal.
is this whiterook? I think this is a good fulfillment of the challenge.

If it makes you feel better, I have 1117 comments not marked helpful.

Don't worry about the trifling of those who are way too sensitive to be displaying their photos on this site. Those who only want to hear that their photo is great but then whine about their score instead of taking some constructive criticism to really improve them. You're an asset to this site. But I don't believe your real name is Don G.

Phew! I'm glad I marked your comment to me helpful ; )
It is too bad though, because I wish more people made comments. I learn SO much from everyone around here, and it bothers me when I score low and I get so few comments. I mean, a lot of times, people say the same things, but have different solutions to better the image. So I hope it doesn't get you down, which I'm guessing it hasn't. |

please don't take this thread as a comment on how people take comments. I get plenty of appreciation for my comments. I just thought of it as a bit of found poetry...

Each challenge I await a Don comment. And wait. And wait.
My photos seem not to warrant a posthumous comment.

I can't believe you didn't comment on my Personification entry Don! It is right up your alley. BTW - your better half loved it and called me "a true artist"! She made my day on that one!

I have 998 comments left unmarked, just hanging out there feeling unloved and unwanted. Think we could start an organization to find them all homes? Maybe build a community center to which they would all flock and commiserate together... |

I think we should start a club, except that we'd have to let Gordon in...

All that means is the checkbox was not marked.
Your mistake and that of others is that you believe the 'This comment was helpful' checkbox is carefully maintained by submitters. It isn't. Generally speaking people either habitually mark it or they habitually do not. Look and you will easily see there is little relationship between checking that box and the 'helpfulness' of the comment.
About all that checkbox has ever done is generate complaints by people who feel their comments are under appreciated by others. What purpose does that serve?
It is a useless statistic that should be removed from the system.

I have always advocated that the button say simply "Thank You." This doesn't place a value on the comment as "good enough to be helpful" but does allow those that have that criteria to acknowledge the commenters time.

But what if I choose not to check the "Thank You" box? Will that be saying FU instead? :P |

I am one of those who "habitually" mark them, but it is more of a thank you or acknowledgement as L2 stated. |

I vote for "I read this comment." |

I get so on the fence when it comes to comments received at times.
When I get a comment like "5", or "You should have cloned out_____" in a basic challenge, or "overexposed" in a shot when it's snowing, or any number of variances, I want to acknowledge their taking the time to say something, but at the same time it was not a helpful comment. Saying it was seems like a way to be cordial or a "good old boy buddy" thing, but defeats the purpose of why it's there.
I too would like to see an added button to acknowledge reading it at least.
[ ] Thank You, this comment was helpful
[ ] Thank You, I have read your comment
These would be cool too:
[ ] Check your monitor calibration
[ ] Think you could do better?
[ ] I'm reporting you and your village to Art
;)

I like that last one a LOT!
I was gonna go through and comment on everyone that did not have fruitS AND vegetableS both in their submission just to stir things up but thought that someone (or a few) might not understand the jest of it and actually have a heart attack from rage and frustration.
