Do I have to use advanced editing on my photo for it to qualify? I just downloaded GIMP based on some of the posts in the forum. And while I've been playing with it, I don't really know how to use anything.

Noop, use as little or as much editing as you see fit, as long as the editing steps are allowed.

:)

Madly, but he's still a so-and-so! ;-)

With regard to editing, no matter the rules in force for the challenge (minimal, basic, advanced, or expert) you can always do less than what's allowed.

Editing is never required regardless of the challenge entered. Once learned it is generally best to apply the minimum amount of editing necessary to bring out the character and image already has. You can't improve on mother nature.

I'd love to go out and get a great street scene but we're in the middle of a snow storm here in Chicago. Would you experienced photographers agree that the light's not that great for photography in a blizzard? It's kind of bright and flat.

I'd love to hear your opinions.

perfect time for street photography!

And I like blizzard photography; it's a lot like fog photos, only clumpier. I would say go play in the snow!

One more question alfresco.

I looked for your ISO, shutter speed, and aperture on your shot but I didn't see it listed. I don't know what it all means but I know that I can adjust them on my camera. I suppose you don't remember off the top of your head??

Sorry, I'm still learning.

That photo was with the D70 so iso would have been 200, it looks like I have favorable dof so I'm guessing f/8(ish), if those are the case I'm guessing shutter 1/400, maybe one stop slower.

I'll check EXIF when I get home and get back to you.

Oh my gosh...don't trouble yourself. What you listed right here is great...I'll go out and play around with different setting.

Thanks so much.

If you have exposure compensation available (which you should), you may want to bump it to around +1. Your camera meter may try to record the snow as middle grey when you really want it white.

Just a thought. Have fun! :D

Are you using the Windows version of GIMP or are you one of those computer geniuses that use Linux?

Nothing wrong with GIMP; it can be balky to learn. I personally strongly recommend that beginners grab Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop Elements, but that's $75 or so bucks that a lot of folks don't have, and GIMP is perfectly capable. It's better than most other programs, but not as user friendly as Paint Shop Pro or Elements.

Just some thoughts. Don't let me distract you from shooting :)

Have fun. You'll find TONS of knowledge and an amazing wilingness to share here at DPC. Nothing would make us happier than to see you go from beginner to ribbon winner.

Keep asking questions. We LOVE to talk. :)

That snowy shot was:

f/9, 1/100, iso 200

I was close.

Well, that didn't last long. I went out into the snow...but no amount of layering and long underwear could keep my fingertips from going numb. I have some shots. But I make no promises.

These help tremendously...Mitt Gloves. Various styles and colors out there. Bought mine at Gander Mountain for $8.

Those look good. I always used a pair of really thin glove liners, with much thicker gloves on over the top - then I could pull my hands out, with the thin gloves on, and shoot like that, but put the thicker gloves back on quickly too.

I saw someone wearing a pair like these at a park one cold day and I was a bit envious. Went on line, looked them up, and voila...

The ones I use are microfleece, but I kind of like the ragg wool ones also. You can uncover your thumb or fingers as needed - very quick to cover back up also.

Yah, I have a pair of those. They are TERRIFIC! Couldn't get along without 'em.
