so my always-panicky client calls me yesterday and breathlessly says:

"I NEED A PHOTO THAT HAS A COUPLE OF CHEF'S HATS ON A CLOTHESLINE WITH A PAIR OF GREEN SOCKS BUT THE HATS HAVE TO LOOK KIND OF GREEN LIKE THEY GOT THROWN IN THE WASHER WITH THE SOCKS AND ENDED UP GREEN AND I NEED THIS FOR AN AD THAT IS DUE TO THE MAGAZINE TOMORROW CAN YOU DO IT?"

and, of course, i say "sure." and then run to the restaurant supply store and to the craft store and come home and spend a few hours applying dye to chef's hats so they look "kinda" green (my client can spot a photoshop job and is really picky so trust me when i say this is just easier). then i get up this morning and go buy some clothesline and come home and move the dining room table and set up the backdrop and the lights and string the clothesline up and hang up the hats and shoot the photo and run to the computer and edit two versions and upload them to the client before 11, knowing that he's ultra-picky and is going to want something, somewhere to be slightly different. never once have i sent him anything that's been "right" the very first time. he's the kind of guy that has to put his little stamp on everything.

i had to run out for a meeting but told him i had my phone and i had the setup still up so he should let me know if he needs anything else. my phone still hadn't rung by the time i got home so i was like "did i actually nail this on the first shot?" i went to check my email and got this:

At least you get to keep the chef hats, socks and shirt - whole matching outfit.

I can see being upset they cancelled. But you can be proud that you nailed it on the first try.

So if we ever see a green chef's hat in a challenge, it's probably yours, huh?

That sucks, but like you said: At least you still get paid! :)

Is it bad that I have gotten into the habit of not throwing anything away because it might be useful in some challenge, someday? :)

That client would get a bill from me anyway.

Yup. How many people buy props for challenges anyway?

Aren't clients fun? You just have to laugh about that kind of stuff, otherwise it will make you cry! Nice shots, btw. :)

And yes, I have purchased props for challenges on SEVERAL occasions.

I don't know what you used to dye them but I'm pretty sure RIT makes a dye remover...

Trying to put on my suitably-sympathetic face without even a trace of the giggle that's working terribly hard to escape :)
