Dunno when it happened.....my Best of has been kind of average, but Fearless Leader gave me a great comment/score.

It's not the greatest pic technically, but the subject material is what got me started into photography again, made me think there were possibilities, and I'm really looking forward to the discussion here.

Yeah, we will have to see. Really I suppose it is not that surprising as if you get a good score you normally have a few comments to say "great shot" or whatever.

Fill the Frame will be interesting, as I (at this moment, possibly deludedly), think that it's one of my technically best shots ever. So we shall see what others think!

Participants are free to stay (as far as I know) but may graduate with honors if they so desire. The original Team Suck competition featured biteme for instance, and Giorgio was here for a brief stay but moved on as well.

Skewsme will probably stick around, but she'll be doing a lot of commenting, methinks... :-)

Fill the frame. I have a potential entry. I'm contemplating sticking it in just for fun. I really should know better by now, but I don't.

Personal satisfaction is the idea in my book. A good score is obviously nice to have, but secondary.

So I'd go ahead and enter.

Let's put it this way - it's something I'll probably see how well it prints and hang it at home if it prints out OK.

THANKS!!!! That's really helpful!

This is an interesting take on that theme.....it's a good example of shallow DOF that's *not* right in the foreground.

I'm definitely going to have an entry in that one......just as soon as I figure out where to set it up.

Actually, I have been experimenting in the various effects of DOF in recent challenges.

I've been using that as a gauge of where I am with my entries.....if I feel like framing it, it seems to do okay.....and if it doesn't, if I liked it well enough to mat and frame it, I care less what anyone else thinks.

I really like my Fill the Frame entry!!!!

I'm gonna print out an 8½X11 now and see what I think!

I say if the man wants to cover parts, we should let him.

Shallow DOF - can you say "Ursula"? I knew you could! Take a look at ursula's portfolio if you'd like to see what can be done with shallow DOF.

Jeb, one of my all time favorite shots that I absolutely LOVE failed to register with the masses in a challenge. But I knew that going in and didn't really mind. So I generally think if I really, really like a shot enough to print it for myself, that if I enter it in a challenge, I'll go in expecting a low score. I'm weird that way.

This is the shot I love, by the way:

Pfft you can't fool me I saw that 6.4 and all those high 5's on your front page. I bet you're just temporarily sucking so you don't get evicted from Team Suck, but we're keeping you so you can go back to sucklessness anytime.

Suckers - would like to thank you for the OOBIE! I thought there were some other entries that were a lot more worthy, and am honored.

Juliboc huge congrats on your top ten and highest score to date!

Just wanted to thank all y'all that went wandering around in my portfolio making helpful comments.

I did notice that apparently.......(looks around surreptitiously)....

Funny....the two shots that have done the best for me so far are ones that I've been the happiest with.....

Oh, that one is just too cool. I have a glass dining room table and never once thought of that!

And yes, it's glass 'cause kitty prints come off best with Windex!

Hey all

Just thought I'd add an extra inducement to get people to recommend which of my pix I should submit to Shutterstock...everyone who PMs me with a serious list of which 5 of my pix are the best will get a copy of my Mum's brownie recipe! (And no fair sending it to others or posting it in the forums!)

Boy, you folks have been busy posters this morning!

Two things caught my eye:

1) To whoever asked about noise reduction shareware, the answer is yes. Actually, all of it is shareware in the sense that you can try a trial version and none of it's horribly expensive.

I use Neat Image: //www.neatimage.com/
The home edition costs $30.

I've also heard good things about Noise Ninja: //www.picturecode.com/
The home bundle costs $45.

For both neat image and noise ninja, you can get both:
1) a Photoshop plugin that also works in other software that can use PS plugins - this is my preferred way of working, because I don't have to save it as a JPG and lose quality. Neat Image shows up in my PS filters menu.
2) a standalone application where you load your image and edit it and then save it as another JPG.

I can't tell you why I chose Neat Image over Noise Ninja. Probably just because it was cheaper. :)

If you're looking for Freeware, there's even one option: Noiseware community edition. It's a standalone program. See the last link here: //www.imagenomic.com/download.aspx

I used the freeware version for a while before buying Neat Image.

Noiseware also comes in versions you can buy.

2) Hand-drawing in advanced editing
Every time I've asked the Site Council about stuff, the answer has been that advanced editing is about the result more than the tool. For example, I asked about filling in a small area in the corner to fix a broken pattern, and was told that I could clone it, paint it, select it and fill it, etc. The point was that it was a small area, not the method used to fill it.

That said, if you ever wonder about an editing choice, send a note to the Site Council. They usually get back pretty quickly; I've even gotten two rounds of opinions the night a challenge was due. Be very clear what you want to do and what rules you're asking about. Use help->contact us->general inquiry

Just know that you're getting an opinion. Think of it as a highly educated, experienced guess as to how the entire SC would vote if presented with your case. Sometimes when it's not clear, the person who happens to pick up your question (they all pull stuff randomly off the queue) will ask other SC members before responding. And if it's a close call, they'll usually tell you.

Well wildcard, you got me figured out. NOT! I have an extraordinary ability to suck without even trying. By the way, that is the ONLY 6 that I have unlike other team suck members who have all kinds of them. No names mentioned. I'm like the comment that melethia made. You know the blind squirrell and the acorn thingy. It's a good thing I have my fellow team novice team mates to hold the team up!

Actually, one of the great things about sucking is that no one expects great things from you. Imagine what people would think if larus or DrAchoo or levyj413 got a bad score!

Wow. I'm quite certain my name has never appeared in a sentence with those two, even humorously. :)

OK, Kelli, I remembered this evening. :-)

What I'd said was I like the way Kelli does everyday things - one of my all time favorites of hers is this one:

The title for it is perfect, for it is indeed a simple, quiet moment in time, beautifully captured. No over processing, no oversaturation - just simple and straightforward and a wonderful memory of a day.

I also got a kick out of this one:

Takes a unique eye to see the possibility that presented itself here.

And give the woman a little freedom in Photoshop and you get this:

Very creative indeed!

Kelli, if there's one thing I think you should try (and I need to concentrate on it more, too) it's to move out of the center. Try composing or cropping more on the thirds lines for instance. I tend to shoot centered because that's the focus point I use, then I crop. Or if I'm paying attention, I'll focus center then shift my view slightly. Oh, and I love the shot of your hubby with the sword, too.

Congrats on the new job, by the way, and I hope you're feeling better!!

snaffles you asked for it, you got it! Just PM'd my picks for submission to Shutterstock. I'll be expecting that brownie recipe :-)
