Sure am glad I stressed over getting mine entered in time... woo.. maybe there needs to be a free self DQ option in the first hour so fewer people feel the need to hang themselves.

Damn bag-heads!! Why leave a comment that simply states what the subject of the photo is? How does that help anybody? Grrrrr.

Not too shabby for a start. I almost can't wait to show my out takes. I had a tough time deciding which of my shots to enter

while I don't expect a high score out of mine, I hardly felt it deserved to be in the 4's GEESH...damn low voters. I don't give out 4's unless it's a mere snapshot or worse.

I shall vote on every image assuming it to be taken in the wild, but I know, rightly or wrongly, that I shall feel very cheated if when the results are out it is clear I have given high marks to a photo of a captive animal. |

I am surprised at how many people have tigers in their backyards! lol... Seriously though. If the shot is composed in such a way that I can't tell its a zoo etc I am going to vote as if the animal is in its natural habitat. However, if there's a DOOR in the picture? (or something equally man made) Well..it might get taken down a point or two. If the animal is in captivity it isn't going anywhere and the photographer can take his/her time trying to get "the" shot. There's also plenty of species to photograph so saying "there wasn't a way to get a good shot" is a bit of cop out.

when I first started here I gave out lower votes than I have in the past 6 months....so you cannot go by stats to assume that is how the person is still voting. Once you have voted on thousands of images it takes forever for that number to come up

The problem is that most Europeans or Americans assume that if they see a shot of a lion, cheetah, leopard, etc. that it must have been shot in a zoo. Forgetting of course that some of us actually live and photograph in Africa.
As for the natural habitat aspect, I doubt whether anyone will find lions, tigers, etc. in a perfectly natural environment - foreigners have been hunting these animals for sport, so they're almost always only found in game reserves, where they can be protected. So, although the reserves are usually quite large (the Kruger Park is the size of some small countries), they are still in 'captivity'. But I think that's as close to their natural habitat as you're ever going to get. The fact is that they are undomesticated in these reserves, and if you step out of your car to get the shot, you will be eaten. That's what I consider wildlife.
Anyway, I just plan to vote not assuming anything. If I see a cage, I know it's in a cage. But if I see a big cat in a bush, I'll figure that's where it was. |

I shall be voting for all entries as though they were taken in the wild - like I said earlier, I will feel cheated if I find later that they were taken in zoos or similar 'kept' environments. For me the 'challenge' was to learn to get familiar with the wildlife and develop skills of shooting unobserved and stealthily. Whatever else, I have certainly grown from taking on this challenge. |

Although in a place like Kruger the 'cage' (i.e. the fences round the camps) is actually keeping people in rather than animals.
