But, if you are shooting 2,4,6 GBs for a challenge entry, you might want to start entering more minimal editing challenges.
Photoshop goes a long way, but everyone of us should strive to get the BEST possible photo from the camera to start with. If you are shooting huge loads of files to get one challenge entry, it's time to slow down and think before pressing that shutter release. |
Let me add when photographing cheese pics to shoot no more than 0 gigs worth.

I submited my entry. The only editing was resize and sharp. The only thing is that I was not happy with the sharpening so I applied it twice (no USM just PS sharpen).
Any SC, is that illegal or will do it?
Thanks

I always find that for fast quality resample work with a decent simple sharpening applied Irfanview does a pretty good job. Ctrl+R type 640 Enter Shift+S = ready. I'd only move it to Photoshop for Save for the Web.
When I have a bit time later today I'll try something for this challenge too.

I love this new system. I cannot compete in the advance editing because one I don't know how to use the software and two I can't afford to buy it. I got into digital photography buy playing with the features on my camera to see what affect they would have on the end product. I think this evens the playing field because now you have to be conscious of your camera settings more.
Very Excited!!!! Rupypug |

Works nice. But still needs 2X Shift+S.
Legal or not?
Thanks!

Okay one more "sharpen" question.
I cannot find "sharpen" in Elements 5, I can only find "auto sharpen". Auto sharpen does not accept parameters so is it allowed?

I just wanna say here that I am pretty chuffed, proud, happy, thick-necked, whatever ... about my entry into this challenge. I will be VERY interested to see if the voters can get into my head on this one. I know this is a brave statement ... but if I get an average of 4.203 on this one, I won't care. If this was NOT my shot I would give it a 10. I am happy with the actualization of my idea and the quality it is as straight from the camera ... ok after 30 attempts or so. I think having taken photographs for MANY years with inferior equipment and loving it and not having a decent computer at that time might give me a step up on this challenge. We will see, I guess ... Feel free to quote this post (in full or not all all, please) whether I get a crap score, a blue ribbon, or something in the middle. My ceramic artist mother-in-law loved it ... and she is very very very very good.
P.S. I also dared to take on the challenge of entering a Fill Your Frame Expert Editing Rules shot using these Minimal Editing Rules as was suggested in another thread. I am not so optimistic about this one but I tried my best to make it look like it had been processed at least a bit while taking it straight from the camera.
Wish me luck.

I went and looked back at the photos from "MINIMAL I"; and I think there will be a big deference between the MINIMAL I and MINIMAL II contests , "I" was running under a deferent set of editing rules, allowing much more freedom and editing tools, and from the photos I saw, those rules made it easier to get results then.
I really like the idea of basically "no editing"; this should put the heat on, especially on some of us who are dropping most of the basics and rushing to do post editing, NOTHING AGAINST EDITING but some needlessly do not try hard enough for a good shot, I included at times, hoping to amend in an editing software and get the results they seek.
I really would love to see a GOOD RIGHT OUT OF THE CAMERA SHOT. I love this new extra editing rule and the challenge it started with; minimal editing for minimal II and hope to see this rule used more often.
Will this be the unique challenge I think it will!!

The shots you want to look at are the results from Straight from the Camera. That challenge was run under very similar rules to the current Minimal Editing rules. |

Not sure what ones you are talking about. Just looking at the top three images you can see that any settings used were used in camera, set before they took their shot.

From memory, you weren't even allowed to rotate or sharpen in Straight From The Camera I.
Yup....here it is...(quoted from the challenge).
"It's been suggested so many times, we're going to give it a whirl. Your challenge is to give us your best image STRAIGHT FROM THE CAMERA. The original MUST be a jpg; you may not use RAW for this challenge. Absolutely NO post-processing is allowed except resizing and compression for the web. That's right; no cropping, no rotating, no image adjustments, no sharpening, no cloning, no borders, no nothing. Have fun!"

Was about to post the same thing. I looked through the photogs details for the top 20, and found nothing but in-camera settings. |

Sweet. I get sick of losing to pics that have been altered dramatically. (Can't afford editing software.) |

Im really excited about this. I hardly ever use an editing software. Very rare that I do, mainly to re-size a photo. I see some of these photos and I know that they have been edited. I think that the true photographer should be able to take a good shot without editing tools. Nothing against those who use it, yall are all very good and creative, I just think this rule will be more fair.

I have been going for ages about a `no editting` ruleset. I am real happy with my minimilism entry, just hope others apprieciate it as well. Regardless, I really hope we have more minimal editting challenges in the future. |

I can't wait for it to start so I can see how my pic does. I am pretty happy with it and I will interested on how everyone else takes it.

Great idea. This addition should keep everyone happy and balance out the challenges quite nicely. :)
Question. I'm assuming that I can enter both challenges if I desire. Correct? |

I think I like this one better than the expert editing. It gets us back to our roots and gets us to know our camera better, as well as composing properly. I think this will definitely turn out to be a very popular idea whenever such a challenge runs. |

I know this dead horse keeps getting beaten again and again, BUT....
I know that what I use editing software for in most cases is to preserve/retain/obtain the image that I "believed in my mind's reality" when I snapped the picture.
If I move the subject a little to the left, crop the picture, perhaps bring up the lighting or shadows......
And how about shooting in RAW?
You've not really finished the shot until you convert it......is adjusting the exposure, white balance, temp, and other RAW adjustments a departure from being a "real" photographer?
The arguments against using editing don't hold much sway for me because I have pictures hanging all over my house that are my legacy, memories, and reminders of the beauty in the world I see every day.....some are edited more than others, but to get the image that I wanted, and saw, when I pressed the shutter button.
There *will* be that time when you'll *almost* have that "Picture of a Lifetime" easily retrievable with an editing program.....that one spectacular shot that will redefine your whole legacy of photography if only you crop it a little and clone out one tiny blemish.....
Will you trash that shot?
