Thanks in advance for your input guys. I'm hoping so although I won't be redoing this shot with this kid since he got his hair all buzzed off.

Yanik,
That is exactly what I think of when I think of low key. And by the common definition you are spot on as well, with 95% of your tones at or below 18% (level 46 of 255)

Okay, we've had a couple of good examples of what low key looks like. Now can somebody post some hints on how to go about lighting a shot like this?

In my opinion these ARE low key... but they're not black on black...

Also known as "low-key," take a photograph using this technique\
it seems to say that it is the same thing....

Okay perhaps they are not low key either? I thought black on black was to have a black object on a black background.

Okay, then.. so quick! What should the definition be before too many people shoot and submit?

Here is an image that I did awhile ago. Its what I would consider black on black. Usually the term means black subject on a black background from what I have seen. I am not a lawyer and do not propose to know more about how to interpet challenge topics here. This is just my opinion...sorry for the disclaimer, Im tired of the what is and shouldnt be threads.

Scab-lab ... that's a beautiful photo. I'm also not a lawyer, but I think it meets the challenge and would've given that one high marks in the black on black challenge :)

A picture with an awful lot of black in it, where even the 'bright parts' are fairly dim when compared to a sheet of paper.

Any problems you had before with submitting should be resolved.

Now all you need is a natural letters challenge (like the numbers one) and you'd be laughing. I like the image too!

now note, just because it says no editing rules in effect, doesn't mean you have to make some kind of nutty digital art extravaganza :P

I´m often told that my b&w pictures are too dark. Like this. Maybe they are "black on black low key"?

It's not black on black, but it's certainly low-key (great shot by the way). My interpretation is that the Challenge is to shoot a low-key image. I';m not convinced it has to be a black object - if it's low key, a lot of it may LOOK black though... :) |
