Does the same for me ... seems kind of sneaky to establish an entirely new round of challenges without an announcement or posting the rules/restrictions.
Maybe it's a mistake when they were testing an updated page. |

Low-Key: at //www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=000N3V
the definition is:
"Low Key - Contains tones ranging from 18% grey to black - Often conveys a more serious, formal, dignified mood. - Mostly used to show the character, or personality of the model by emphasizing shape, texture, and making use of âmoodâ lighting. - Good low key maintains detail in the blackest shadow area. - Lighting requires more side and back lighting, to produce large shadow areas. - Makes good use of gobos, barn doors, or other light focusing devises. - Careful use of fill lights is necessary to maintain low-key mood while filling the shadows just enough to give detail."

It looks like the expert software user will devour this challenge. |

Yup -- see my post below. It's starting to bother me that there hasn't been any definitive explanation of what's going on ... looks like maybe the first "black mark" for DPC in quite a while. |

Nope. as usual, the person who takes the best pic will win. your best editing tool for this type of thing (these are the shots I love to take) is your "gamma/contrast/lightness" settings, which are available in every challenge.

Black Mark? I think they just gave us a free challenge - sounds like fun to me. I won't fault them for giving me more to play with. An e-mail warning would have been nice, but seriously...aren't we all here every day anyway? :)
If no one objects, I'll throw a few sample images up of what a low-key shot is (my opinion anyway) as a starting point. I won't do it if I don't get + feedback on the issue - don't want to start another rant session.
Peace out.

I think the "black mark" is the lack of any clue what's going on AND the sudden announcement of a challenge you can't enter if you have entered the Off center subject challenge already (for those trying to see the details, log out, then read it, then log back in).

I flagged the problems that some people are finding, having entered one member challenge already. Hopefully we can get this sorted out tomorrow. |

Fabulous - I have my black-on-black as of ... about an hour from now. Would love to be able to enter both (don't plan on editing it either).

Is this the first time there have been consequent member challenges? prob just a software glitch - I'd doubt that they would make it an either/or situation. that wouldn't make any sense. cuz I always make sense. in case you were wondering.

GeneralE, if you were just being punny with your "black mark" comment, I apologize for it taking me 3 minutes to get it. Apparently Tanqueray and tonic makes me slow.

So I can't submit to both Black and Black and Off-Center Subject? I can't even find out the details on Black and Black since I already submitted my shot for Off-Center Subject? That doesn't really make sense. Will this be fixed soon? |

I'm betting this will be fixed by tomorrow. Those young lads should be sleeping by now, so they won't know it's a problem until the morning. Shoot your low-key images and prepare to submit them.

alright, I'm going to post a link to a page from Tom Ang's "Digital Photographer's Handbook (is that some kind of copyright infringement?) on low-key images. If you don't want to be tainted by it, don't click the link. it has two sample images, and a very clear description, IMO.
Just in case Tom reads this and gets mad, I'll plug his book - Go read it. it's the best DP read I've found so far. Lots of technical advice geared to those who are not doing this professionally, and lots of images to get you inspired.
again, if you don't want to see it, don't click here:

Well it WAS supposed to be funny, but like most humorous things, with a grain of truth behind it. I know things "happen" sometimes, but a lot of the time we're spending hashing this out could have been saved with an announcement of some kind. |

For the people who can't see the details - go to the challenge index by clicking on 'Challenges' in the menu bar, which will take you to this page.
