Wow, a 5D can't handle a splash? ;-)
NIKON LIVES!!!!
Seriously, sorry to hear about that. I'm so damn paranoid that one day, I'll have the same luck. |

I was a bit surprised at how fragile the 5D was. Like I said, I don't believe it went under. I think it just got a fair amount of splash on it. When I went back to the house it was far from what I'd consider "soaking wet". |
The 1DMII is a little more than the street price of the 5D--the rebates make the difference more. The 1DsMII is twice as much. But if you add the cost of repair to the 5D ... :-)
It may not have been water damage. When you fell, the camera may have impacted something, or been jerked around enough to unseat some component or connector. |

The latest update is $550 and counting for the repair. They haven't done the total diagnostics yet. I am thanking my stars for taking out that insurance rider which has cost me $10 so far. I called them and they agreed the coverage is "broad" as so there should not be a problem with paying for it.

Just don't make too many claims or you'll be looking for new household insurance. They seem quite quick to drop people who claim for a lot of camera repairs. (I've seen it happen a few times) A pain if its just renters insurance, but quite a bit more expensive if you own your home, I suspect. That and the whole 'cant use it for business or overseas' clauses make it often quite a pain.

Well, I didn't claim the bent pins for this reason. I would think (or at least hope) they would be more likely to just drop the rider rather than the whole policy. I did get a warning like that a decade ago when my bike kept getting stolen.

I have heard whole policies getting dropped in the past. Often that's been people claiming things like $3k cameras though, rather than just repair costs so I'm sure you'll be fine in this case.
They all seem to get the claim paid, but just a 'thanks but no thanks' on the next renewal. Add on the fact that State Farm in Texas were pretty adamant that they wouldn't cover me if I was selling any of my photos or if I traveled outside of the US (e.g., if I happened to sell some prints in gallery, then any time I was using my camera they considered it 'working' and hence not insured) and it became too much of a pain. They wouldn't even cover it properly as a separate inland marine policy. YMMV. I'm not an insurance broker. Yada Yada Yada.

Bad luck doc. The 200D looked good to me for the weather sealing, but full frame is hardto lose once you are used to it, and the 5D has such a wonderful sensor. Maybe a plastic bag is your answer...!

One thing I will mention (and I know you probably really need to hear this at this point) but I'm glad YOU are all right. Falling into a pond in the beginning of January isn't exactly the best way to increase ones quality of life. Glad to hear you are water proof even if the camera isn't. Hopefully you get your camera back in time for your trip.

Thanks. It wasn't that bad. I was only 100 yards from my parent's house and although Caden and I were pretty wet, we were not cold or wet enough to not instantly forget it once we saw the river otters.

one would think a model as high-end as the EOS-5D would be weather sealed at least? sorry about your camera.

That's two bazz sightings in a few weeks. What gives? You thinking about a return tour?

Big time bummer on the accident and repairs.
I just got email from Fuji repair that my trusty S3Pro is on the way home : ) I have been working on getting the best images that I can with my old HP 3meg P&S in the meantime.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Btw, I noticed there is a Canon 1DS on sale at Fred Miranda for $2200 posted just a little while ago.

Absolutely
Its a great community of helpful people who all have a common interest. I'll prolly by the K10D in the next week or so and see if that helps generate some motivation.
I may be able to get a discount for two bodies if you want one.......they're weather sealed :)
bazz.
