I'm trying to help my mom setup an automated backup routine on her PC. Her PC is running Windows XP Home edition and it's setup so no login is required at startup time. She is running under the OWNER account and there is apparently no password.

I want to use the XP Scheduled Tasks to run a backup of her data on a nightly schedule. I set up the task, but it won't run because the account associated with the task doesn't have a password entered in that field.

Is there actually a password associated with this account and it's just getting bypassed at startup? If so, I can reset that password to something else and get my scheduled task to run. If not, how do I go about scheduling tasks in XP that require a user account to run without a password?

Nevermind... It works fine if I tell the task to run only when the computer is logged on...

You found one solution... here's another. Set up another account, give it administrative priveleges, and tell it "run as user" and specify that account.

That would work, but I'm wondering if XP would require an initial logon for my mom if I set it up that way...

Good question, and one I don't know the answer to... I've never played around with not requiring a logon.

It ends up wanting a password when you set it up that way, at least that's what I remember. I used to have machines set up with auto-logins but ended up having to enable user accounts and actual passwords, for pretty much the same reason as you describe.
