i'm still new here and i'm far from an expert.
however, dpchallenge rules state this:
You must:
* rate entries on a scale of 1 to 10. A score of 1 is a âbadâ photo, and a score of 10 is a âgoodâ photo
You may not:
* give an entry a lower score because you believe it violates the Challenge Rules.
so, when my score drops suddenly, and some guy comments on my photo "not sure how well this fits the challenge" ... does that make his vote and comment a violation of the rules?
obviously i don't know if he gave me a 1 ... but my score did drop ... noticeably! further, i know my photo's not bad. not deserving of a 1,2,3 ... it's a decent shot, both stylistically and technically.
what are my options here??
cheers
david

violating the challenge rules and not meeting the challenge are quite different things.

Unfortunately, your only option is to suck it up.
You'll never be able to "prove" which voter gave you a low vote, and it's not uncommon for people to comment later while someone else is voting, making your score drop a coincidence.

the few people that over-deduct for minor things get averaged out over the course of the week. the people who are voting at midnight are generally the most strict... i'm sure the impact of a few votes like this will be minimal as the voting continues |

i'm not annoyed at the score ... i'm annoyed at the attitude. i thought a bad score should be followed by a constructive comment.
of the challenges i've entered, the comments i've received have always been constructive. this is the first time someone has written that.
it just doesn't seem in the spirit of the challenge ...

it's not... but, it happens. there's no way to regulate it, but fortunately those votes usually average out to have no significant impact in the end (especially since most people get some votes like this). there are several recent threads in the forums discussing the philosophy of voting and regarding how to give constructive feedback. there is a system in place now where when a vote of a 1-3 is given for the first time, there is a reminder stating that constructive comments are felt to be helpful when giving low votes. it's not a requirement, but it at least serves as a reminder. |

Well, the comment is constructive in a way - it lets you know that the voter didn't think you met the challenge and they adjusted the score accordingly. |

It states:
You may not:
* give an entry a lower score because you believe it violates the Challenge Rules.
... not challenge appropriateness ...
Whether or not it violates the rules or not is not yours to say. Whether it deserves a lower score because it does not live up to the challenge criteria is a subjective thing.
If someone enters a picture of a banana when the challenge title is "Apples", do you expect voters' not to give a lower score on this shot on the strength that it has something to do with apples because it is a fruit that is NOT an apple even if it is technically "nice"?
