I've never been there specifically, but I know the salmon runs in the North North West are extremely thick. I went to Alaska about 10 years ago during salmon season, and was amazed watching a little native kid fish. There were signs all over saying "no snag fishing." I didn't know what it meant until I saw this kid. He was literally casting out and bringing in huge salmon within 30 seconds. When you looked in the water you could see layers and layers of salmon below the surface.
I can imagine that to be a dream come true for bald eagles. I saw tons up there, but that was Alaska where's actually been talks of too many eagles, heh.
Another great time to see eagles and hawks is birthing season for cows. It sounds gross, but they love to eat the birthy goo and sack after the baby cow busts out of it. If you spend a couple hours during that time of year around a large open pasture, you'll be sure to see all kinds of cool stuff. Hawks and eagles on the circling or on poles/fences, and falcons on the power lines.
Hope you enjoy your trip. Be sure to post your photos when you get home. I can't wait to see what you found up there. |

I'll be in Vancouver at the end of January. I already read about the eagles in Squamish and I'm planning to go there (I will have 4 days off).
I know that the peak will be over but I still hope to see many of them, if they are gone I will still have some chances when I get on Vancouver Island.

If you miss Squamish, Goldstream Provincial Park just west of Victoria is another gathering spot for hundreds of eagles after the salmon run. It's only a few minutes from my place, so I'll be there when the weather and my schedule both cooperate :)
Goldstream
Hmm... maybe I should stick some shots in my portfolio of the salmon run and the natives spear-fishing it...?
eta; just sticking one in :)
Hope you get some great eagle shots! :D

i live close to the fraser river in the valley, there are also hundreds (if not thousands) of eagles here. They are incredible to watch. In both squamish and along the fraser you will want at least a 600mm lens (before 1.6 crop factors) for the most part the 'action is just beyond a good reach. Also rain is in the forecast so you will want to really think about keeping your gear dry. I am planning to try shooting them with a blind over the next couple weeks to see if that gets me any closer. I have gotten a few shots as they fly by but other than the occassional one perched and getting a close shot of one perched, getting them with salmon is hard. Anyway viewing them at the fraser valley is much less busy than squamish, squamish everyone knows of and is very busy if you are keen to try coming out this way one day I can tell you where to go.
