Talk about your likes, dislikes, technical flaws -- but try to be specific -- "I don't care for this because..." or "The grain in this photo really works for me because..." Let's try to turn this into (keep this) an educational process for everybody and hope it bleeds over into the comments/critiques on the challenges.

Title: Sixty-Two

This image doesn't hold my interest very long. It's flat and there is no dimension to it. My personal taste for photography inlcudes three-dimensions. I rarely shoot a flat image myself, because I don't particularly enjoy the view of it.

This image, however, does have some interesting texture to it. The rivets have some amount of interest, and the weather-beaten paint makes me think I could run my finger across it and remove the color.

My mind wants me to believe that this is a train car of some sort. That's probably because I have an interest in trains and I can't determine what this object is.

This is like one of those trick math problems my 8th grade algebra teacher used to give us occasionally... there is NOT enough information available in the message to solve the problem :)

Would I print it and hang it up? No... Would I like it better in black and white? Yes... :)

This image needs some other context to frame the idea...

To quote from some barely remembered cartoon song out of my past...

First you stick a rag, put it in the bag, (bomp bomp) then you bend your back, put it in the sack, (bomp bomp) that's the way it's done, it's a lot of fun, (bomp bomp) cutting capers, putting papers in the bag

Hee hee :-)

Does it matter?

I really like it. I love the tactility of it, textures crawling off the page. The tonal balance between the colours is also interesting.

Bottom line, I'd buy it and hang it on an office wall quite happily.

Eh...

I give up -- not gonna bother critiquing this one because of lack of apparent interest. And, since I seem to have picked more losers than winners in terms of sparking dialogue, well, game over.

Thanks for playing everybody. :-)

Jeff

PS -- This one was mine, and yes John it's the side of an old train caboose.

Well you got someone wanting to buy it so I wouldn't call it a complete
wash-out. I think part of the problem is the really high thread turn-over
on the main page. Hopefully we can work out a better way for DPC2

Perhaps even have a independant 'critque' section - has these types
of discussions, just by their nature deserve longer exposure and some
more thought, compared to the high turn over threads.

Drew - are you listening :)

I think the colors are interesting, and the composition between the numbers and poster looking things make a nice balance thing. As far as photographs go, it is good. The exposure, lighting, focus etc. For me personally, though, it does not hold a lot of interest. If this were a challenge entry, I would probably suggest a different angle or perspective, or like someone else mentioned more context.

The only thing I can't figure out is why you called it 62? :-) (Just kiddiing)

Well this is the first time I saw this thread, so it may not be lack of interest at all. More like what Gordon said "I think part of the problem is the really high thread turn-over
on the main page"

The picture holds my interest long enough for my eyes to be led around looking for clues. My impression is that it's a train, which I like. The colors are nice and muted and the rivets add dimensionality, although subtle. I love rust...weird being that I am...lol To me it indicates a natural aging process and insinuates that this train has been around and seen lots of places over time. If given lots of time my mind would wonder where this train may have traveled, and thereby provoking my imagination. To me that is a good picture.
I also like the numbers being present. I am curious about the framed portion. I don't know what it is. Some old signs? Adds more interest.
My pictures are here.
