Another question about Life photographers. Who was the first African-American photographer to work at Life magazine?

Off the top of my head, Gordon Parks. Is that right?

R.

Yes, you're right!

Your turn.

Born in New York in 1923, this photographer dropped out of high school and joined the Merchant Marine's photographic section. Upon his return in 1944, he found a job as a photographer in a department store. Within two years he had been "found" by an art director at HARPER'S BAZAAR and was producing work for them as well as VOGUE, LOOK, and a number of other magazines. During the early years, he made his living primarily through work in advertising. His real passion, however, was the portrait and its ability to express the essence of its subject.

Can you name the photographer?

Easy for you and me, anyway :-) We ought to be banned from answering until the question's been up for an hour or more :-)

OK, here's one:

This French war photographer, most well known for coverage of Vietnam, was the only known, accredited journalist to parachute into combat with American troops at war.

Who is this photographer?

and

What award did they receive in 1976?

Catherine Leroy

Robert Capa Award

I noticed how carefully you'd phrased it in a gender neutral way. Was a big help :)

"Raising the flag on Iwo Jima", taken of course on Iwo Jima, by Joe Rosenthal.

in the shot were:
Franklin Sousley, Harlon Block, Michael Strank, John Bradley, Rene Gagnon, and Ira Hayes. The first three did not survive the war, the others did.

It was shot with a Speed Graphic

OK.

This scientist/inventor went to Harvard, but never bothered to graduate. He designed optical systems for spy planes.

What is his best known photographic invention?

And what inspired him to invent it?

no one?

Off the top of my head, would that be Ed Land? Who invented the Polaroid camera?

His company was founded during WWII, and he needed to find a non-military source of income afterwards.

True, but there was a specific incident that inspired this particular invention.

While on vacation in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Land got his inspiration. After a day of local sightseeing with his three year old daughter, she asked to see the pictures they had taken. She was disappointed when Land tried, in vain, to explain that they needed to be developed and printed and that she wouldn't be able to view them that evening. She wanted to see her pictures right away.
