Three little questions
Someone asked me these yesterday. I'm mostly stumped.

1. I sell it
2. Keeps me motivated
3. Sell more
I've answered those questions before. It seems that people who don't "get" photography are perplexed as to why most of us do it. If we're not earning 6 figures from it they don't see why we bother. Just smile and tell them you love it... that's all that matters.

The thing is, the person who asked me them, is the president of the Texas Photographic Society, so I think he 'gets' photography. It really brought me up short and is making me think a bit more than just brushing them off with a glib answer and shooting some more general stuff or bouncing onto the next thing.

1. Create beautiful and memorable pictures that make people stop and stare.
2. See #1
3. Fame, glory, and women. |

1. What do you want to do with photography?
It's not what I want to do WITH it, it's that I can't imagine NOT doing it.
2. What are your goals?
To become one with the Light. (This is not a flippant answer...)
3. Why do you enter contests ?
It's my recreation in my retirement. I will make pictures regardless; entering contests/challenges is fun.
R.

1. What do you want to do with photography?
I have an urge to create. This applies to more than just photography, but that's my answer. I desire to create something which pleases me.
2. What are your goals?
In home, part-time, portrait studio ... enough profit to continue upgrading my gear.
3. Why do you enter contests ?
I love to compete ... dpc is a game to me. However, I must admit that if I sucked, I probably wouldn't want to play. It's sad, but true.

1. What do you want to do with photography?
Tell artful stories.
2. What are your goals?
To make interesting stories that others want to see and hear so that both they and I can enjoy being more human because of them.
3. Why do you enter contests ?
I enjoy evaluations that are based on the image alone...anonymity takes away the pretense and destroys expectations. (That, and the fact that I was born with a competitive nature. ;-)) |

1. To capture moments in time, especially those moments that are not big enough to be kept in memory but are still a grain of sand that make up life. To express thoughts, whether my own or those that speak through the images I create. To take enjoyment from what I see and to give it by sharing it with those who didnt see it too.
2. To create a body of work that I can be proud of. To fulfil the desires of #1 above and beyond what I could imagine.
3. To learn, to receive validation from peers, and as a means to have my work be seen.

1. I want to present my ideas in the quickest visually representative way I've found so far. My background is visual arts, and photography is the most instantly gratifying creative outlet.
2. My goals are to continually learn and improve, find subject matter that matches whatever idea I may currently have, and to ultimately rent studio space.
3. Aside from direct questions/answers, tutorials, and the like, contests are the most direct way to learn about photography and post, especially concerning what appeals most to every kind of viewer (not that popular subject matter or general photographic technique are necessarily the end goals). |

What do you want to do with photography?
I take pictures that are not for sale. I need to make pictures that have no market value. I need to give my pictures a seriousness that discourages the trivialisation of everything.
I need to express, not myself, but that which is and of which, I too, am an infintisimally small part.
What I want to do with photography, in other words, is to create a small body of work that matches the quality of my experience.
What are your goals?
I don't believe in goals as something to be achieved and completed. I believe, instead, in keeping an open mind, so I may have a good chance of involving all my senses to the fullest.
Why do you enter contests ?
To test the climate and to see how an image stands up in the context of other pictures, although there are better methods. It's easy enough and doesn't do any harm.

1. What do you want to do with photography?
four things: 1) to get to a point where i can capture any image i can envision; 2) for people to hire me specifically to shoot for them (as opposed to hiring just because i'm available or because they like my rates), 3) to create a body of work that simply cannot be ignored, and 4) make enough money to support my family, pay for my children's education, to secure my wife and my retirement, and to be able to enjoy this life i've been given.
2. What are your goals?
to accomplish the things mentioned in #1
3. Why do you enter contests ?
grins ;-)

1. What do you want to do with photography?
Capture the world as I see it in my mind, to use the image (or images) to evoke an emotional response that will resonate within the viewer. Of those little slices of my mind, some I share with everyone, some I sell, some I share with a select few and some I keep myself.
2. What are your goals?
Hmmm. I have lots of goals, but specific to photography, I want to sell more work. Eventually, I'd also like to be able to generate as much income through photography as I get in salary as an engineer.
3. Why do you enter contests ?
I haven't entered contests in quite a while. Most of the work I've been doing lately has been work I don't plan to share. Maybe that's selfish. When I do enter contests, I find the feedback much more valuable than the ribbon or score.

1. What do you want to do with photography?
escape from my boring life, show off some semblance of skill
2. What are your goals?
learn, learn and all of #1
3. Why do you enter contests ?
it is a way of self evaluation, ego boosting, stretching my brain
touching someone who might understand

1. What do you want to do with photography?
Have you ever walked into an old barber shop or diner and seen forty or fifty year old photographs on the wall. Amazed at the difference between those pictures and what you would see out side if you looked? That's the impact I want to make and the kind I want to take. Because once something is gone the only vision you have of it is in memory or photography.
2. What are your goals?
To capture timeless pictures that will impact others for years to come. Pictures that my children's children children can say wow while sitting on my lap as I rock them. My dimly eyes relying more on memory as their tender clear eyes view the photographs.
3. Why do you enter contests ?
Yes! for fun but I take picture for pleasure.

1. What do you want to do with photography?
Amass a collection of bizarre images, put them in some sort of time capsule and watch from above with amusement as future archaeologists uncover them and piece together the story of this ancient civilization of village burners who worshipped wooden idols.
2. What are your goals?
To build a body of work worthy of complete misinterpretation by future archaeologists. AND, of course, to watch with amusement. OH! AND- I seek the Holy Grail - although that's more of a quest than a goal.
3. Why do you enter contests ?
Some famous sportscaster or philosopher once said "Tis better to have played and lost than to played, won, and subsequently get DQ'd" - I have shaped my life around that. ...well, that and the coloring inside the lines thing I learned in Kindergarten.
I believe I answered 3 out of 3 correctly, tell me what I won, Vanna... |
