It's funny when I read the thread title I thought you might be referring to my image. Travesti is the French way to say transvestite...

Oh well...nobody cares. ;)

I happen to like it a lot. However, I'm not surprised it scored averagely. It has too much to recommend it and too much to dislike to do well here. It actually has some emotion, some character. Those things then mean that people will find something to like or dislike.

You can't do well with an image with emotional content here. Everyone has to be universally fine with it to do well.

Popularity wins, not art. Commerical style portraits do well here, because that style of work is supposed to appeal to a wider audience. Fine art style portraits (like this) typically only have to appeal to a juror to get in to a show - they'll pick maybe more interesting work, but with more likelyhood that it'll provoke emotions in the viewer. Like/dislike. Love/ hate.

Not universally popular. Not suited to score high at dpc.

Eeeeeee. . ..a thread like this can sure make a body feel vulnerable.

I am so touched and encouraged that so many people like it. And, like I said, vulnerable by the ones that hate it or are critical of it.

The minute I saw her, I felt something so artistic and wonderful in her look. I loved her style. I LOVE her big nose and imperfect beauty, and because I'm an emotional, empathic person, I literally felt her depth and character. Whatever was imperfect about how I processed it or whatever -- I was going for the capture of "her". . .and it means so much to me that so many people I respect got it! THANK YOU!!!

So that's my excuse! ;)

BTW - I loved the portrait, and many other images that didn't come in the top 50. and top 100. and top 200. The longer I'm here, the harder it is for me to understand the 'popular' vote. Or my tastes have really evolved...

But I think that's the thing. You loved it. It provoked a strong reaction in you. It provokes that strong reaction in other people. Some good, some bad.

If you go around making people feel things, then some will vote high and some will vote low.

If the picture is technically good, creative and devoid of anything emotional that might trigger a negative reaction, then it'll do well.
Throw that emotional trigger in there and things start to get voted down more and score lower than perhaps the people who love them think they deserve.

But it isn't a vote for which is the most fantastic image to a small group of people. It is a vote for which image gets the highest average vote.

You can see this btw, in the U shaped voting curve on this image. Compare it to the winner (which is excellent too), but nobody is going to vote it low for not liking bird shots. The winner is technical excellent. A great capture. Nothing to really dislike or get emotionally involved in. So it gets high marks. Nothing low because there isn't anything to dislike or find 'horrible'

I don't think it was a 'Travesty' but I sure liked the shot.
Now that I know it was a candid I like it even more.
She's so ethnic/European looking with a big attitude going on! The shot is fantastic to my eye. I think it scored well, didn't win but not all the shots can be in the top three spots.
Congrats SandyP wonderful shooting!

I'm not too fond of it either... but it probably would of been a 7 from me technically good but gah don't like the model

...but we can't tell one big bird from another of the same species, so you don't tend to get comments like that about bird photos ;) People have an emotional response to other people. Likes & dislikes. Loves & hates.

There's a Scenery vs People thread somewhere. This is why scenery tends to do well. Or commercially styled shots with young, pretty female models tend to do well.

Well, I gotta chime in. I agree with Robert, 100%. This is an outstanding image. It's a true candid, which makes it all the more interesting. I do agree that at large print sizes, some of the post processing might be visible. Still, it's an outstanding character study, a wonderful example of what candid photgraphy is about.
I would not expect it to ribbon here, but it deserves to be in that category.

I think you certainly captured "her", and the fact that it was candid makes it more special. You made connections with many people here, and that's not easy to do.

Why do I think it scored lower than it could have? It's the nose and imperfect beauty. This says nothing about the photograph, photographer, or the model, but a lot about those who may have voted it lower because she wasn't as photogenic as some other models on the site.

I looked at this photo a long time before I voted. Yes, the nose is the first thing that caught my eye, but it can be good to use an "imperfect" model at times. My main problem with the photo was the stark black background. I also felt her mouth seemed a litle tense.

I cant believe how much of an topic post has been dedicated to this shot.

HOwever, it has raised a few chuckles from me, especially from the photographers notes.. and I quote..

"This is a candid photo. The minute I saw her, I thought she looked like a woman from the 1940's."

Sorry mate, the minute I saw her two words sprang to mind.

BIG & NOSE

Hehe, maybe I just look at pictures too literally. And yes, maybe somewhere in it there is "hidden beauty" etc etc. But really, on the surface its just a picture of a women with a really big hooter..

I am shallow. I admit it..

Cant wait to hear this reviewed in the next DPC-Podcast, they love this stuff (and if you havent downloaded the podcast, do it, they are brilliant!!)

Sorry, I'm usually in with the off-beat picture too, but not on this one.

This stirs no emotion of any kind in me. It's a fairly interesting study, but not something to go and drool over. This one and that one of the girlin the train station by froumoaznicul or whatever his name was, don't get what people see in them.

I wouldn't have "expected" it on the front page either, just better than 6.2...

R.

Bearmusic.. if ever a challenge comes up called `Big Noses` I am sure it will be up there in the top three.. lol

get over it.

IMO I think people who see this are reading too much into it. it is a photo of a big nosed woman. Period. Nothing more!! lol

I like this image. I don't understand why some people can't get past the nose or "imperfect" beauty of this woman. She has a big nose. The image shows her big nose. That's part of who she is and part of this portrait. If her nose were not large and the maker had made it appear large unintentionally or without reason I could understand some of these objections. But, to me, implying that big-nosed women should not be represented in photographs is simply bigotted.

it is a "nice photo" , like I said what else can you say. a "nice" big nosed woman in a photo
