how can i fix this photo? tell me some steps, please. I've tried all sorts of colour correction techniques but they still either come out yellow, washed out, or ashy and blue. i even used custom white balance when i took this and it still turned out quite yellow. can anyone help?

Lovely image, Twyla. It really doesn't need much. I adjusted levels to bring back some of the dark and lightest tones, used Adjust/Selective Color to choose White and brighten that a bit, added +15 contrast, sharpen and a touch of blur to soften the skin. A 5 minute fix, but as I said, it really doesn't need much. Again, Lovely.
Here's my version:

my attempt. a bit softer and subdued
and it may be the easy way out of the color balance dillema but it looks real good in black and white

With more of a halo effect added:
and a generally softer look/feel: <---(my fav)
Both involved a basic white balance adjustment, then a little sharpening before the soft focus was applied, then history brushed lightly back (or eraser in the new layer via copy) some light touch up in the eyes, mostly levels, the upper right and upper left areas in background were first sponge tooled to remove any traces of color, then highlight dodged to fade. Some minor contrast and red saturation adjustments in the second one.
This was just too priceless of a shot to pass up!! |

I like the original quite a bit as it is, it's not overdone, the eyes are beautiful and clear, and it looks good. Brad's second edit looks great. |

Thanks!
What works most often for the white balance is to go to Image, Adjustments, Levels, and use the right eyedropper to find the whitest white, most often zooming in to 1200% when there's an area I suspect to have true white and click it, and do again as needed until it looks right. Well that's one way anyway... |

Couldn't pass up a B&W version:
Nothing more than open, white balance adjustment using the eyedropper, b&w conversion, a little lightening of the irises, followed by a light manual sharpening of them, and a light highlight dodge in the two upper corners. |

How's this? Autolevels corrected the color, made a gothic glow version which was lovely for the face but ran the BG to pure white. Selected the whites and cut them out of the GG layer and pasted them as a new layer, then set in soft light mode and adjusted opacity to merge the original BG with the white BG and salvage some gauzy detail.

I used this technique to find the correct color correction. It is nice because it is systematic and has corrected almost all indoor color balnce problems that I have had. I only did this action and then a curve with a slight boost to lower range of midtones.

My shot at it ...
Bumped the contrast, desat the yellows, bump up the reds, dodge the eyes and sharpen tool on eyes, USM, despeckle, auto levels and there ya go.
