The other thing you have to keep in mind. Not everyone on this site lives in a location that has a million photogenic subjects around. Some live in rural areas where sunsets and flowers are the only good subjects available.

Like Mak says take it on the chin and keep on going. If you are as good as you say you are, You'll do just fine here.

Thanks a lot, Rocky! That helped. Cheers, mate!

Subject matter - if someone does not like what they see then this will affect their vote, and always remember that art is subjective

I have respect for the person that left this comment on my perspective pic:

"This is a very effective image. From my perspective the subject is repulsive. I don't want to be unfair, so I'm not going to rate it."

...but I also realise that many people of less integrity will have voted a one because they find the image disagreable.

I have come to learn over time that although it's really nice to do well here, dpc votes count for very little in the real world, that said the experience gained here is priceless :)

I made a decision the first time I voted on a challange, that I lould vote on every shot, or I would not vote at all, a shot has to be very poor, and not meet the challange before I concider a 1, and at the other end it has to be exceptional, and meet tha challange to get a ten, if the subject is not to my taste I try to just look at the quality of the work, and how well it fits the challange, if every one who finds it distastfull skips it, and the ones who like mark it high, it will score higher than it should, if it's the worst photo I ever saw, but fits the challange, I will give a two or three, for the effort to meet the challange If it does not fit the challange at all, I will mark no more than five, after all, there is no point in a challange, if it's not met. how borin is that.

hehehe, thats funny, mate... dunno bout the nudes aspect (tho i can see your point:)). And about the American flag... isnt it funny how it can b found in most of the challenges , if not all? U can not go wrong with that... I am considering in having a Romanian flag in all my entries:) that would be cool hehe

there are some cartoons, dunno if u have it over there, guess they are pretty old, two goofy characters, one is supposed 2 b smarter, whenever the other one screws up, he is told, "bend over, george" and gets a kick in the arse...

I have to do it! I have said nothing for so long. I think any one who gives a one or a two for a ribbon winner is either trying to boost his own score or just has no idea....either way they should be ashamed of themselves. I hope I feel better now, having got that of my chest. Apart from the frustration of receiving ones for good photo's I do actually enjoy the challenge....

So what you are saying is, that it's not allowed to disagree with the majority of this site? The majority is always right?

Well, in my book it's perfectly OK if the winner pictures get low ratings as well as all the high ones. It's just like food: Lot's of people like oysters and think they are the best (rate them 10) - I just can't stand them and wouldn't rate them higher than 2 (tops)...

edited for typos

A good photographer recognizes a good photo. You may not particularly like an image but to give a well composed photo that meets the challenge a one is revealing something about the scorers character

So you know the definition of a good photo? Wow, that must be cool...

a score under 4 is for photograps that don't meet the challenge and are poor technically too....

i cannot tell maybe if a photo is "good"... but if it is well executed yes

that's my "poor" opinion :P

I can see what Tap is saying, which is that if a photo contains elements such as "meets challenge" "in focus" "well exposed", and gets rated overall as the best photo, it's hard to see how some people end up rating that photo as a 1.

That was the basis of my question earlier in this thread (or one of the other many threads about this) where I asked how people come to the decision. But I guess we will never know. "voting curves" is probably the most rational reason that I've heard, but I struggle to balance that with the photos that I've seen.

DIVIAN I think there are enough shots in a challenge to vote for the best 20%. I never gave a vote less than 5, why give some1 a 1 when u can appreciate other shots? If it is that bad it should not even b worth mentioning, right?

By way of an extreme and very hypothetical demonstration... if a photo was submitted that was blurry, small and failed to meet the challenge, and rather than vote low everyone voting decided not to vote on that image at all except for 1 person who decided it was a surreal abstract masterpiece and voted it a 10 - whoot - Blue ribbon winner with a 100% voting average.

Did I really just say whoot? - I'm spending too much time on american forums :)
(PS how do you do the quote thingy?)

Sometimes don't you just wish there was a button so you could change your username after asking a dumb question?
I'll edit this to my original post so as not to derail the current thread any further
thanks for the reply silverscreen

No I don't really know what a good photo is, i am having fun learning. I think all of us appreciate constructive comments on our photo's. A one with no comment is not helpful. It does however make for interesting discussion. Thankyou

I don't think so. A technically perfect photo that nobody likes but meets the challenge should not score high.....and might even rate a bunch of ones. No one would recognize someone as being a good photographer if their work did not have the key element of 'hey, I like that' regardless of how well it met the criteria of a 'technically good photo'. If you like it, it might be a good photo. Just my opinion.

I'm still waiting for the opportunity to enter my technically perfect shot of 'Ping-Pong Ball on Black Background'

I start at 10 for a full nude and work the score back based on how much the nude subject is obscured.

The rest of the images I just click randomly around the 5 mark. :-)

I am tempted to try this out and see how many tens a forty year old slightly overweight full frontal, no obscurity, self portrait nude might score....of course it would be technically perfect.

I give 1's to everyone and then adjust from there.

For some photos, I wish I could give less than 1.
