I am new around here and I just wanna say I do not really understand why some ppl give 1 in their notes. What I mean is I think there are enough shots in a challenge to vote for the best 20%. I never gave a vote less than 5, why give some1 a 1 when u can appreciate other shots? If it is that bad it should not even b worth mentioning, right? I think my headwear entry should have scored higher, I guess it;s more about "marketing". Anyway, I will keep my expectations low, stop being a "good boy" and vote with 1 as well... Cheers!

Hiya,

Welcome to DPC!

It is important to realise that a challenge on DPC is essentially a competition. The ribbons awarded may be virtual but they are worth a great deal to the participants on this site. The standards here are very high, and people are very competitive.

People would argue that to selectively vote on your preferred 20% of the images distorts the voting distribution in favour of your taste - your preferred images are artificially inflated. This is one reason why the images are presented randomly.

Regarding your submissionb - I think it is fair to say that almost everyone thinks their image should have doen better. To do well at DPC though it is not enough to please only your own tastes - you need to please the majority. I've taken a quick look at your shot and personally think the score is about where I would expect it to be. I suspect you have a high number of lower voters due to individuals lowering their score because they feel you did not meet the challenge to their satisfaction.

I do recommend you take the time to read the FAQ - //www.dpchallenge.com/help_faq.php

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Paul

Left you a comment on your entry.
Note: even ribboners get 1s and 2s, for an example pls. have a look at the statistics of my only ribboning picture' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/542/thumb/383189.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/542/thumb/383189.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' "Tension". You just have to wear it, especially if you enter photos YOU like instead of ones to please the crowd.

Cheers, Oliver

I am just hoping that the SC will be tracking these "Trolls".

So if this behaviour becomes obvious, as in they persistently vote 1s and 2s on the blantant winning photos, then they will be banned.

I would trust the SC jusdgement on this.

this is important. imagine if you will that everyone did this then nobody would get a bad score and the worst photos would score just as high or higher than the very great photos. sure everyone tastes are different and maybe you would say that those poorer shots deserved to win but the majority wouldn't feel that way, the poorer shot would just have allot less votes. to arrive at realistic averages shots need to have plenty of votes.

your photo looks good, its not a "1" shot, for sure... I will never enter pictures just to please the crowd, whats the point? I think I know more about photography than most of the ppl around here, so, no offence, but I am not lowering my level just to please them. Looks like a pic I entered in the perspective challenge is gonna do better, even if I think it is not as good as the one that scored less in the headwear challenge. Sorry if it sounds like bragging, coz i am not, and i hate that, but it is true, I have been doing this for years, and I do not understand how some ppl score... I am sick of tacky sunsets and colourful silly flowers...

Then submit your images and accept the scores you receive. If you don't bother about pleasing the crowd (which likes a very scripted formula here at DPC) then don't complain about the scores being handed out.

I agree, and if you really think you know more than people here you may be doing yourself a disservice as there are hundreds of very very talented people here that can teach even long time pros things.

Also to be honest if you know so much about photography you understand that your shot did not show much photography skill. it was kinda funny sure but it was a photo of a stamp so it is not what most people consider photographic art.

I was complaing about the level of photography knowledge around here, and the fact that most ppl like tacky shots. I was expecting a low score.

Divian,

I rated your shot 3 - and that is (of course) where I think it belongs. Your picture was, as I see it, created by the British Postal Service more than it was created by you. I actually believe that it would have been DQ'ed on that ground if the rules hadn't changed recently.

I was not expecting my photo to win or anything, just a better score. And I am learning some things here, thats true. Just dont get the scoring pattern

people's taste (or lack thereof) can not be attributed to knowledge. sure sometimes you will get a comment on your high key shot about it being blown out but you will also get votes you don't deserve. i have gotten 10s for shots that sucked.

Divian,
learn from your mistakes, as mentioned earlier the image really wasnt worth much more than what it got, if at all.

BUT, coming on here and moaning about it will achieve ZILCH!

And look on the bright side, your next entry probably wont be as crap ( I am talking about the score... honest..)

:P

So you are saying if you think thier photo is bad or needs improvemnt, you just ingore it, thus do not help them or provide input as to how they can improve the shot?

That seems unfair to all involved in my opinion.

Voting on only 20% of the entries is unfair again in my opinion. However, I suppose by only voting on those images you like, you get your average vote cast higher and thus avoid the "TROLL" whiners here.

Divian.. Brush yourself down mate pick yourself up and crack on with the next challenge, simple. Does it REALLY matter if you got a lower score than you were expecting? I do that all the time, I enter a shot because I LIKE IT, I have studied the eye candy adored by DPC voters and if you want a high score, a ribbon, a pat on the back.. bow down, open up, and prepare for penetration... OR.. keep on submitting what YOU like and screw the system.. but don't winge on and on and on about it mate because it just makes you look like a moany, bitter, grumpy old so and so.

C'mon man, forget the fantasy world and deal with the real world. Submit what you like to do and accept peoples opinions OR you can develope YOUR style of photography and present it to the world with head held high regardless of if it can win a virtual prize.. this is the internet, Imaging that.

thanks, mac, u are right, I am prepared to score low, I would not like to think I was a stock shot, commercial photographer. Let the other "Geoarges" bend over and get "scored". Cheers, mate!
