I just recieved an offer from the biggest hotel chain in Iceland, a friend of mine is the financial manager for the chain so I got a really good price for the GTG.

since Gary and Nasti are having another GTG in June/July then I think September would be the best time for a GTG in Iceland.

the best deal is : arriving on the 14th of september and departing on the 23rd of september

schedule :

14th. arrival date, I will try to get accomodation in Keflavik wich is about 3 minutes drive from the airport.
those arriving early could get a trip to the Blue Lagoon and even a drive around Reykjanes wich has many great photo ops. late dinner and even check out the local nitelife.

15th. very early departure, drive along the south coast of Iceland, regular photostops and dinnerstops.
arriving at hotel Hofn late night, beer at the local pub is all they offer I think ;)

16th, early drive back a few miles to the glacier lagoon for a twilight photoshoot for those who want, then continuing the tour to Egilsstadir stopping for photoops, picking up the sleepers on the way ;), we will spend 2 nights at Egilstadir.

17th. sleep in, walk around town in the morning, maby we'll go swimming, then after lunch we'll go for a drive around the fjords for a photoop, there is one of the largest stone collection in the world in one of the small villages. back for dinner and a good night sleep.

18th. drive some more, visit Myvatn for some great photoshoot, then going to Husavik where we'll spend another night.

19th. early departure for a long drive, we'll stop at some amazing waterfalls along the way, and visit the capital in the north, Akureyri, have lunch there, and continue the tour all the way to Reykholt, where we'll spend another night at a theme hotel. (ancient nordic theme).

20th. yet another early rise, going for a drive around Borgarfjord and maby even Snaefellsnes, we'll see some glaciers, waterfalls, and other amazing landscapes. then head back to the hotel for another night.

21st. early rise, another drive, this time we can visit the whaling harbour on our way to Reykjavik were we'll spend the final 2 nights, friday and saturday, and you really can party all night, the last bars close at around 8am.

22nd. sleep in. for those that need sleep ;) in the evening I was hoping to get a conference room, were we could have a workshop, show some of the photographs taken during the trip, I am dealing with 2 great photographers and trying to get them to lecture, and show us some of their work, if there is interest in getting a photoshop chrash course in some special editing tecnique then that could be possible, I know some amazing photoshoppers, and I hope we will have some of DPC's finest on this trip :)

23rd. departure, there is a bus schedule from the hotel to the airport.

the price for the hotel room is ISK 5000 per night, single or double, so 2 pers. in a room only pay ISK 2500 each.

at the current exchange rate that would be $72.39 for each room, or $36.19 per pers. in double room.

all rooms have bathrooms, and breakfast is included.

that will be 9 nights, or $651.5 total for each room, or $325.75 per.pers for double room.

the regular price for this season is $302 per night for a double room at the hotel in Reykjavik that is 76% discount.

those prices are for orders around 50 rooms, so I want to make this the biggest DPC GTG ever.

prices for the bus aren't available yet, as for restaurant bookings and such. but when I see how many still want to come I will get group prices from some of my clients and friends. (restaurant owners and such)

those still interested in coming please let me know so I can continue with the planing.

I am definatly interested in comming over, but I need to see if I can make it financialy, there are a lot of things going on right now in my life, but I will let you know ASAP

When do you need the confirmation?
11/14/2006 07:05:59 PM · #128
that sounds amazing. how much time are we talking as its my 21st next year so i could have some spare money that i could use for this trip.
11/14/2006 07:22:24 PM · #129
I will need a 95% sure by mid december, and final confirmation and deposit ather to me or to the hotels no later than 15th feb.

I will have to book the rooms by mid december, and pay the deposit by feb 15th to keep the prices so low.

these hotels are usually fully booked at these dates, so getting a room at these dates can be really hard after mid feb.

and some of the hotels are fully booked just by the GTG ;)

right will look into my finances and other such things. would non dpc'ers be ok to come?
11/14/2006 07:27:58 PM · #131
anyone is welcome, as long as they are interested in photography and there is still room, if they are not, then I think this trip would be really boring for them.
11/14/2006 07:31:35 PM · #132
yeah he is into photography, i know he can afford it but will have to check with him on availability (he's in the forces, so i cant be sure if he will be free or not will try to get in touch with him) and we could share a double room (will be nothing compared to sleeping on the streets....long story :P)

oh, yes, i love the idea!
but I'll have to apply for visa, as I am from the third world country, heheh :) Therefore, I would need an official invitation :((

That sounds fantastic and my heart says GO ! but my body says DON'T !
I've been speaking about this GTG with my husband and he thought that it could be a very interesting trip for me but I'm quite sure that my back won't stand the intensive days...
It has been a nice dream , I write this with tears in my eyes.

a bad back shouldn't stop you from coming to Iceland, I broke 7 vertebraes in my back a few years ago, it will never heal, but I will not let it stop me from having fun and enjoying life.

the plan is to rent a luxury bus, one with good suspention and good travelling seats. there will be quite some time sitting and looking out the window every day, but the photo stops will be very casual, you can go shoot if you want, or you can stay in the bus and rest. this trip is NOT a bootcamp ;)

Me and my husband are definately planning to go - however, we will be traveling to Sweden, Norway and Iceland, so we won't be staying in the hotel, but would like to spend a couple of photoshoots with you guys, if possible.

I just looked at the ferry from Denmark to Iceland, it is operated by The Smyril Line.

But I do not think it is an option. It is not a ferry that sails 2 times a day, but it has a route and stops at several harbours on its way. On the 14th of september for example it is in Lerwick on the Shetland Islands and arrives in Hanstholm, Denmark on the 15th. It leaves the 15th at 21.00 in the evening and arrives via Lerwick, Bergen (Norway) and Torshavn (Faröer) in Iceland on Tuesday the 18th at 9.00 in the morning.... That's 60 hours I believe. For the journey back the same applies. You have to wait till tuesday for it and spent 60 hours on the boat again.
Now, if I had a lot of holydays left, I actually do, but let's not get into that, I would not have a problem with it. But they cannot miss me three weeks at work. :)

Price was okay when you are with more people. You have to include meals and stuff like that too, plus fuel to Denmark and with the unusable dates extra nights at hotels. That makes it more expensive than the airplane.

For these dates Icelandair charges app 550 euro including tax (unsure if that includes everything) for Amsterdam-Reykjavik and vice versa. Excluding reservation costs (was checking via Schiphol.nl).

This is also the cheapest price at ebookers.nl
Flying from Brussels is more expensive.

On icelandair.nl I get a price of 339,44 EUR including taxes and reservation, the only difference with schiphol.nl is that the plane leaves on the 23th at 7.50 in the morning instead of around 12 or so.

the schedule looks really nice to me, would love to come, even if i've seen most of the things, problem is just the price...

but for those having a hard time to decide if or if not, just do it, a trip to iceland is really worth the money, lovely people and amazing landscape!...*sigh*

when you are in reykholt, say hello to the elderly man on the neighbouring farm, he's my boss at the moment...;)
