Sorry to be a spoilsport, but you're trying to cram too much into too little time

14th. arrival date, I will try to get accomodation in Keflavik wich is about 3 minutes drive from the airport.
those arriving early could get a trip to the Blue Lagoon and even a drive around Reykjanes wich has many great photo ops. late dinner and even check out the local nitelife.
15th. very early departure, drive along the south coast of Iceland, regular photostops and dinnerstops.
arriving at hotel Hofn late night, beer at the local pub is all they offer I think ;)

there are simply far far far too many photo-ops on this route for this to be do-able with a busload of photographers in one day.

16th, early drive back a few miles to the glacier lagoon for a twilight photoshoot for those who want, then continuing the tour to Egilsstadir stopping for photoops, picking up the sleepers on the way ;), we will spend 2 nights at Egilstadir.

17th. sleep in, walk around town in the morning, maby we'll go swimming, then after lunch we'll go for a drive around the fjords for a photoop, there is one of the largest stone collection in the world in one of the small villages. back for dinner and a good night sleep.

better to go to Seyðisfjörður or to Borgarfjörður eystri

18th. drive some more, visit Myvatn for some great photoshoot, then going to Husavik where we'll spend another night.

19th. early departure for a long drive, we'll stop at some amazing waterfalls along the way, and visit the capital in the north, Akureyri, have lunch there, and continue the tour all the way to Reykholt, where we'll spend another night at a theme hotel. (ancient nordic theme).

20th. yet another early rise, going for a drive around Borgarfjord and maby even Snaefellsnes, we'll see some glaciers, waterfalls, and other amazing landscapes. then head back to the hotel for another night.

difficult to do both Borgarfjörður and Snæfellsnes in one day, since Snæfellsnes is a long day in it self.

21st. early rise, another drive, this time we can visit the whaling harbour on our way to Reykjavik were we'll spend the final 2 nights, friday and saturday, and you really can party all night, the last bars close at around 8am.

22nd. sleep in. for those that need sleep ;) in the evening I was hoping to get a conference room, were we could have a workshop, show some of the photographs taken during the trip, I am dealing with 2 great photographers and trying to get them to lecture, and show us some of their work, if there is interest in getting a photoshop chrash course in some special editing tecnique then that could be possible, I know some amazing photoshoppers, and I hope we will have some of DPC's finest on this trip :)

but you've managed to get some good prices on this.

I'd suggest a stop on the 15th around Skógar and spend the night there, and on day less in Egilsstaðir if you need to keep the rest of the dates in order.

BTW mid september is early enough for Norther lights so bring warm clothes for night shooting.

Is there any chance to change this date? I would really enjoy the trip...

sorry, can't do that, some of the hotels are closed during winter season, so they close at the end of septemeber. and earlier is not possible either, at least not with the prices I got, you can always pay $300+ for each night at other times, but to pay little over $300 for nine nights is just possible with this deal.

and I will be joining Gary and Nasti for their GTG if there is room for me, so there you have it ;)

ok, you can be a spoilsport ;) actually all comment and help is appreciated from those that have some knowledge about Iceland, and preferably some contacts and the ability to make deals.

1. I agree, if I can find accomodation for the whole group at similar prices I will change the scedule.

2. the plan is to sleep at Egilsstadir, and go to the fjords, both of them is in route.

3. when wer'e at Reykholt the group will get to choose between those 2 places.

4. those prices are the main factor in how the schedule is, I have planned the trips from hotels belonging to Fosshotel.

5. same answer as in 1. and then a trip to thorsmork is possible.

6. that is one of the reasons I chose theese dates, not to cold, but still possibility of great lighting :)

for 10 days.. Iceland isn't exactly cheap, so bring a platinum VISA ;)

seriously, a dinner at a restaurant is about $50 to $100 with a glass of wine.

and a beer at the pub is about $7

there is only breakfast included at the hotels, so you need money for food for 10 days, a hotdog is only $3 and a big mac is about $7 if you want to eat cheap :)

then there is everything else you might want to do...

I'd say to be able to do most of the things we think of about $700-$1000 is the minimum to get by properly...

yeah i had head it was expensive. So if in total for hotel room flights and pocket money £855 or $1616 should cover me i think.

crap :P ok so if i round up to £1000 which is about $1890 that would i hope cover those extra costs......i will be a very poor student the following year.

People, be aware that Dansig has left DPC after he felt that he was treated unfairly by the SC (This is not the place to discuss that and I have no opinion about it as I do not now the details).

Dansig said before his account was cancelled (on his own request) that

the 2007 Iceland GTG is cancelled

as far as he was concerned.

He said that he might hand over the organisation to a third party, but that he would not be involved anymore. There is no further information about that and Dansig will not be able to tell us since his account is no longer active.

I think it is best for all involved and interested to regard this GTG as cancelled for now.

Maybe the SC can copy this note into the first post for people who stumble into this discussion later and won't find this post. Another option is to lock this tread. I'll sent a ticket about this in a moment in case they miss it.

darn, right when i was clearing my schedule :(
12/03/2006 07:53:47 AM · #168
Don't worry we can still all go over there and pop round to see LARUS and HEIDA for a nice cup of tea.. I'm sure they wont mind having 25 DPCers over for the week.
12/03/2006 10:17:17 AM · #169
I was thinking of doing it myself. I never have an easy time clearing my schedule but sometimes all the planets align just right.

Keep us posted.
12/03/2006 10:25:53 AM · #170
If there is still intrest to do this trip it will not be much trouble making it happen actually. We have plenty of people here on DPC that are ready to make this happen.

Send me emails on hjaltih [at] gmail [dot] com if you are intrested in doing this. Include your DPC username so I can keep a tracable list over how many are intrested in this.

Sure, why not come over for Tea :)

I´ll chip with the planning in if anyone want´s my help but I don´t feel up for being responsible for the whole thing, that will just take too much of my time that I am not prepared to sacrifice.

I totally vouch for Hjalti (Bolti) and totally trust the guy to plan this and like I said Hjalti, if you want to take over I´ll at least lend a hand if you need it.

Actually, after Larus offered to buy me a beer if I ever showed up there, I checked flights via Air Canada and United. I couldn't find the Iceland airport listed on their websites, however. What's it called, and what is its three letter symbol? (ie Toronto is YYZ, and Chicago is ORD).
12/03/2006 10:52:35 AM · #173
Keflavik Airport, the three letter symbol is KEF.
