Unfortunately, over the last couple of weeks, many people have complained to no end about comments they have received. As a result, way fewer comments are being given. (I've noticed this on my own shots.) To try to counter this effect, I've commented on every shot in the Complementary Colors challenge that I voted on, and I encourage everyone to try to do the same, time permitting.
I appreciate all the wonderful comments I've gotten, both positive, negative, and neutral, and I even like the ones that just say "Nice."
Thanks, All! |

Well I appreciated the comment I got from you on my entry - Thanks! |

I've been trying to comment at least on everything I rate 9 or higher, or below 7. However, time constraints mean I won't live up to it, quite, on Complementary - better luck on the next one!
Here's a thought: what's the general reaction to 'form letter comments,' comments where what you have to say about several photos is largely the same, with extra stuff on the end pertaining to particular images? |

That is kind of singling people out and depending on the comment and the person could be a problem...
I have my own method of commenting. I comment on all the 10's and usually the 9s then all the 1, 2, and 3s. Sometimes commenting on the 4s through 8s depending on the individual photo. But I feel if it is so good to give a 9 or 10 to then I know what it is that I like and can freely comment. Also if I give a 1, 2 or 3, there is obviously something I don't like and I can usually say exactly what it is. |

Well, Gordon, eloise, and OneSweetSin, my complementary colors shot doesn't have a comment from any of you yet. I guess you'll have to do all of them to make sure you get mine, cuz I can't tell you which one it is.
Thanks again, everyone, for all comments. |

I just finished commenting on the whole members challenge. You should have one now. So right now, I've given 83 comments and got 3 back... I'll have a positive balance soon at this rate!

Yup, I got one from Gordon. Thank you very much, by the way. It was useful and instructive. |

Thank you, too, Gordon, for your kind words. I got so tired voting on the secondary colors that my commenting dropped off after about 1/3 of the pix. I've decided not to try so many at one sitting in the future!
I'm going back and adding comments now after entering my own photo for the first time and realizing how important they can be. My technological knowledge is scanty, so I can only say what I like/or don't like, not always exactly why... |

Thanks again, everyone, for all comments. |
Steve,
If you didn't get a comment from me that means I gave you somewhere between a 4 and an 8. |

That's fine - any comment is appreciated.
Unfortunately I think I'll have to join as a member soon if I'm every going to get another comment. Actually, it's not quite that bad but I'm still running about a 10 given to 1 received ratio.

Does this happen to anyone else? I go through the photos first and give a score, based on first impression. Then I go through them again, and try to comment on at least some. As I'm commenting, many of the pictures start looking better and better, boy, some of them start looking downright good, and I end up upping scores (creates a problem for those that were a 10 originally). |

Hopefully the decrease in comments is due to the fact that it's warming up out there, and people are out taking pics. I'll be back to commenting very soon, as I am no longer working again.

Yeah, this happens to me, too! The more I look at a photo, the more I like what the photographer has done. I like to revisit them a few times too. Try joining the Critique Club! I think I've learned more through these indepth critiques than almost anything else. It's a really fun process.
My comments have declined over the past couple of weeks, but it's just because I'm so busy all of the sudden. I still manage to get in about a third to a half commented on for each challenge and about 5-7 critiques in a week. I'll try to pick it up, as I find comments very helpful. Thanks for your patience! |

Steve, I like the idea of getting the amount of critiques back on track. I hope that, as a bonus, the quality of critiques also increases.
I'll try to critique all of the members challenges from now on.

What do you have to do to join the critique club?

This is a good reason to take your time voting... Don't rush through the vote... you have all week :) Vote on a few a day and spend a little time looking at each image... Ask yourself what the photographer is trying to show you... Give each image at least 30 seconds or even a minute before you press the number to vote...
:)

I've had my lowest ever number of comments on my secondary colours entry - though I'm taking that as an in-depth critique in it's own right: and actually it is the most boring photo I've ever submitted, Think I still had my primary colours shot in my mind when I took it :-)
