The current poll allows you to select one of three voting options (generic as now, multi-level, multi-level but can't imagine how). I chose generic because it allows me the freedom to use my own multi-level system, which on top of the three criteria suggested certainly contains the factor of overall appeal. You can see at photo.net how an example of multi-level voting works and how many different interpretations people still have. In the end it is a personal judgement, let's keep the freedom to express it as a personal judgement.
Any thoughts ?

I don't think it's really about standardizing the vote. It's more about providing feedback to the photographer...

Here's your method of feedback.
You enter..you get hourly scoring updates, you have a few comments, you have forums, you have friends here to ask in e-mail.
If you aren't taking advantage of these tools...will another type of scoring really help you? And how many who vote here WANT to get into lengthy voting procedures?
If people want more input on their photos ..use all the resources already here and there are ..what...100 or more other sites to play with as well? Or join a local club..which is the absolute best way to get better as a photographer.
I think people who REALLY want to get better will use resources and tools at their disposal...others just use reasons to complain. |

It's already very hard to find time to vote on all pictures. If voting were to be changed to require seperate votes for different elements it would take even longer and I don't know that I'd be able to vote any more.

I have to agree with you there... since I've joined the site a couple months ago, I have voted for every single picture in every challenge because I feel that's my "duty" as a participant... but trying to break down a vote for each picture would get increasingly difficult as the number of submissions continues to rise. Hats off to folks like Autool who do this most every week... but I'd rather encourage people to vote with the easiest method possible.

Perhaps instead of incorporating multi level voting, leave the normal voting scale as it is and include some ready-made comments for those that want to leave comments but dont have as much time.
i.e. 1-10 scale and then check all that applies
1. Composition needs work 2. Composition is interesting and well done 3. Colour balance is off 4. Image is tilted 5. Image is a. overexposed b. underexposed 6. Lighting too harsh 7. Lighting is perfect 8. etc etc
you'd still have a space at the bottom for your own comments if that's what you like. |

I think this is an excellent idea, as long as it's optional. It provides a viable option for providing more feedback than just a vote, without taking a great deal of time. The key would be coming up with a list which addresses common issues which affect our scoring.

I have a feeling that for most people, for most photos, multi-level voting will mean just clicking the same number in each category. In other words, you decide a photo is a 6, and you click 6 in each level.
However, for some photos the extra information will be enlightening, and for a lot of voters who look closely at the photos but don't have the time or the courage to comment on them all, it will give them an extra level of expression in their voting that will help them engage more with the site. I think a lot of photographers will also be more fulfilled to have a high score in one category but lower scores in others, and might not complain as much in the forums :).
I don't know, I think it would be great to try.

I couldn't agree more. I considered writing a Java applet that would use a series of checked boxes to form a comment I could cut/paste. Time hasn't been a friend to the project and I was never comfortable with the 'cookie cutter' comments it would likely produce. But anything that would increase the quantity of feedback while not costing the commenter too much time is probably a great idea. |
