First off, I am here to learn, so feel free to be brutal.
For my Train submission I was attempting to make this look like it was an old color photograph that had aged. In my mind I accomplished this, but I didn't seem to convey this feeling to the voters (except for a few). So I have two questions for everyone:
1. What ideas do you have to make this look more like a picture someone would come across in a dusty old scrap book?
2. Would I have been better off to submit this one?
Thanks in advance!!!
edit: spelling.

I prefer the sepia image.. with a beefing up of the tones/curves |

Hi Bill...I definitely think the second one if better. The first looks like it was taken by an el-cheapo instamatic camera...the second is more like a 20D image. When you submitted the image, no one was to know that you were trying to get an old scrapbook feel, and so they marked it accordingly. Sometimes the good intention isn't conveyed, and the voters see it without the explanation...
Hope that helps Bill,

I think your entry looked as though it has a WB error.
my attempt to make it look like an "old photo" (albeit being kept in great condition, look, no fungus or moth!)

I think you did a good job making it looks like an old color photo. It looks like an old 60's postcard.
But, the sepia...just strait b&w or crayons version is just so much more appealing to the eyes.
Go get em next time. |

I like the second one, but I would have converted to b&w first using channels, hues, tones, etc. (not just desaturating). Once in b&w, then apply sepia.
One further step (for that "old photograph" feeling) would be to make it grainy through higher contrast and/or apply some sort of vignetting effect to the corners.
Just my $0.02 worth (I'm no expert).

I actually PM'ed you with what I did to get the results, but maybe the PM got lost. Well, here it is again. It's fairly easy and I used only a basic viewer, IrfanView to create it from your existing shot.
1. bump up contrast (old photos are contrasty if you've noticed)
2. bump up gamma, lower the brightness (again, old film thingy)
3. desaturate (for that faded old film effect)
4. blur it a little
You might also want to add grain to it if you like.
Hope this helps! And thanks for liking my edit! made me smile.
