Nope... They grow on very low, spreading bushes. They are planted in bogs, which have dikes to control water flow. A little water is let in every now and then for irrigation, and then for harvesting they flood the bogs and the berries release and float to the surface.

I've heard of it but it's very cool to actually see it in action. : )

Cape Cod is Cranberry Central. We have a LOT of bogs under cultivation here. It's by far one of the least mechanized of all major farming/growing operations; they still do it basically the way they always have, except now they "vacuum" the berries up instead of raking them into baskets and hand-carrying them to shore.

As far as I know coffee growing still has the title for least-mechanized, incidentally; apparently they have to hand-pick the fruits individually at exactly the right moment in their growth; with berries right next to each other at different stages of ripeness.

Yah, should have entered in October Free Study instead of my "artistic" shot that's tanking big-time. The reason I didn't is because to my eyes the image is flawed by seeing only the backs of the heads of two of the three harvesters. I tried so hard to get a dynamic shot that showed all three working and faces or profiles of all, but I had a friend with me and her patience would only stretch so far...

Strawberry-picking faces the same issues, plus you can't bruise the fruits, and you have to bend down rather than reach up. It's probably one of the most physically-demanding harvesting jobs around.

Oh yeah, I knew about it but hadn't seen any recent photos; I really like the photo and its "oversaturated" colors : )

I hate to think of the juice in my glass coming from a place where burly guys in old workboots have been stomping around. Thanks for the visual. :/

That's a great picture..and yea, I didn't realize that's how they were harvested! When I was 8 or 9 me and a friend went into the berry picking business here in Newfoundland. We're in berry-central for Canada. We spent days crawling around picking blueberries and partridgeberries (also known as Lindonberries) that we sold to producers. Blueberries grow on really low bushes too, sometimes in bogs and sometimes just right on rock.

Too much work though so we went back to making boxes at the fish plant.

Yep, WI & MA together produce more than 80% of the US supply of cranberries! Y'all go out and buy lots of 'em for Turkey Day!
