Is it me or is it tough to get a comment from one? |

Pretty much unless of course your shot is headed for a ribbon.

not really, recent ribbon winners like Goodman and others are very generous with their comments? |

I'm curious as to why you mentioned him. The OP ask if it's tough to receive comments from ribbon winners and you posted Qart's name. Crayon mentioned Goodman who leaves lots of comments and you followed with Qart who I would categorize as someone that is tough to receive a comment from since he only has 900 or so.

I think I misunderstood what you meant.. I agree with what you are saying.. I meant that he is always nice with the comments that he does leave and responds to the comments made on his images... |

Agreed. I've had a lot of recent comments from ribbon winners: hotpasta, jaded_youth, Structor, glad2badad, & Judi just to name a few... and as I've never ribboned, they obviously weren't commenting on prospective winners (i wish!) ;O)

I used to do a lot of commenting, most of it with very specific discussion of the image and how it might be improved, and I got tired of fielding angry PMs from photographers who disagreed with my analysis/suggestions. So I pretty much stopped commenting except to praise images I liked a lot.
I have decided to start commenting more as I vote; I've already made 40 or so comments in the "Landscape" challenge. We'll see how it goes. If "they" come after me again, I'll just stop again :-(

I don't know about the others, but I know that if I were to ever get a comment from you describing what you didn't like about one of my photos I'd be thrilled. Not that you didn't like the photo, but because you took the time to tell me why.
Though I've lacked participating in the challenges lately, I read the forums on this site every day. I've always respected you for both your talent and your knowledge. You've always seemed to be one of the first to help others. I find it hard to believe that you have ever been rude in your comments or that you've ever had an ill intent.
Maybe there should be a check box when entering a challenge saying "I do not wish to receive comments from people who think my photo is less than a perfect 10." or "I wish to receive praise only."
Comment on, sir. Comment on.

I am one of the 40 Bear. Your comment was a technical suggestion on how the image might be improved. I am not upset but I would love you to expand on this after the challenge as I am unsure of how to accomplish your suggestion. |

I know for me personally I feel bad about not commenting as much as I used to do, just the fact is I am up to my ears in schoolwork these days and haven´t really commented or voted for a couple of months.

Is it still like that I wonder? I've been doing quite a bit of commenting the last couple of months and not all of it is flowery, glowing comments. So often I read in the forums complaining about not getting enough comments, especially on the lower scoring images. My effort lately has been to comment more across the spectrum, although I admit the middle scores (5,6) get less attention if time is a factor.
Even with "telling it straight", I've only had 1 or 2 PM's that were anywhere close to being an angry response. Several thank yous and some that wanted to clarify the intent/vision of their challenge entry.
I'm glad to hear you're back on the commenting trail Robert. Always a pleasure to receive one from you! :D
edit - typo.

I'm exactly the same. My comments were always constructive, but often not appreciated so I moved on. |

I do try to comment alot but the last two months my comments have gone to side challenge shots(selp ports, 30 day macro) and also recent uploads instead of in challenge photos. So thanks for bringing this up as It's something that just hasnt really crossed my mind as I havent been voting much either. I do about 25-50% and comment here and there but not like I used to. for one I know alot more peoples shots/styles now and avoiding so many shots makes it hard for me to do 100% voting and commenting like I used to.also..well, also I dont think of myself as a "ribbon winner".lol, more like a one hit wonder. :P |

How do you gauge that? You get nasty PMs too? Personally, I've never experienced that but if you guys have than I can certainly understand quiting but I think it's a real loss to the site in general. For example, the person receiving your comments are not the only people who stand to benefit from your insight. Anybody that reads it afterwards can learn especially if your critiques are molded in such a way so that it speak to the general issues at hand. I think a lot of the problems this site faces today can be directly attributed to this lack of learning resource. If the leaders of this site and the industry general aren't leading in it's ideals someone else will and probably won't be for the better.
