Greetings...
I'm looking for 5-7 photographers who share my views on photography for a project. I'm not really looking for people who shoot the same things I do. I'm just looking for other photographers who appreciate photography as an art and a creative outlet.
My personal interests in photography are rather simple. I enjoy the creative process, the technical process, the printing process, and the quest for images that transcend the bounds of a 'photograph' and become something that speaks on a higher level.
The project is to form a critique circle of just a few people who are willing to share photos and spend time considering photos from others in the group. The purpose of this group is to advance the processes and objective described above.
If this sounds interesting to you, please respond in this thread...

I'm not confident enough to play in this sandbox, but I'd like to know if the work and the comments would be made public so the folks in the wings could watch. |

Sounds very interesting to me. My shooting schedule has been rather limiting the past few months but I'd be more than happy to "consider photos from others in the group" and will appreciate any considering on my photos.
edit:
Umm, what exactly do you mean by considering? and what method will be used to communicate? e.g. irc chat?

Being cough and cold season I dont share anything this time of year, however I'd like to watch from the sidelines, as I'm not in the category of you and the others.

I play nice in sandboxes, but I usually make deep holes in the sand to feel the coolness beneath while everyone around me builds their castles.
You can't "have" me John, but I am interested in looking at those sand castles from my hole.
As you well know, or you should, unlike yourself I don't make "comments", I critique on the detail of the image, and leave the commenting to everyone else.
What you say?

doing a check of portofolios, I admit that this is beyond me at this time. Does this point out that there is a need here for novice/intermediates to help one another? John, I really appreciate your approach to critqueing an image. How can mortals gain the knowledge? |

Humble is one trait I admire but what's with that not in the category talk all about? pish posh :)
Everyone here can offer a thought, idea or suggestion. Each one of them helps.

I heartily agree. John never said he wanted "great" photographers - just willing and interested ones who share his passion.

The question was...DO YOU SHARE MY VIEWS?
I think this is a criteria.

Based on that criteria, I'd say yes. |

Sounds very close to the way I think. Don't think I've gone there quite as far as I'd like yet, but I'm trying. I'd participate. |

jmsetzler your salon style of critique sounds intriguing.
I know it will prove worthwhile to those who are able to partake of it.
However, the Critique Club, with its sometimes novice, sometimes expert advisers, continues to call me.
So, while it will be interesting to see the results of your salon critiques, I'll be one of those onlookers as well.. |

Hi John,
This is a timely post!
Recently I came across a writing project called x365.org (WARNING - language). What struck me about this particular project was what some of the writers were able to accomplish in just 40-60 words - their words put a "picture" in my head.
Upon reflection, I decided that I wanted to try to use my photography to reverse this process -- to create the kind of pictures where people might see them, and think the same 40-60 words in their head. But hey, a picture is worth 1000 words, right? :)
I'd be glad to participate in a Critique Circle where I could both give and receive honest feedback as to whether a particular image (or set of images) achieves the photographer's desired goal. Something that speaks more to the artistry of a body of work, rather than working on strictly technicals.
Trust you'll let me know if something like this fits in with your idea of what the Critique Circle should be.

I would love to participate in this endeavor. My only concern is that I am away for 6 weeks at a time but on the 6 weeks that I am home I can give a lot of time to critique photos. If you think this is O.K. let me know.

Unfortunately, I don't think so. However, I encourage anyone else to form similar circles. I also suggest that you keep them small and private.
