Vtruan, your opinion might be that people don't know what it is, but I bet that some people you so confidently declared "have no clue" met at least one of the 10,000 definitions floating around.

I was blasted on Boken I, so I learned about this subject, and have improved on each Boken since, so bring on Boken IV. :)

That would be a great book. "Bokeh for Begginers, DPC's Guide to better bokeh"

Hi Keli welcome to DPC.

This is the best description of BoKeh I have found but it is a very contentious topic not just on DPC but with all photographers.

From Wiki:

"Bokeh (from the Japanese boke ‚ڂ¯, "blur"[1]) is a photographic term describing the subjective aesthetic qualities of out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens. For example, causing an out-of-focus background image may reduce distractions and emphasize the primary subject."

Good luck and have fun.

Thank you. I appreciate the information. Maybe I can improve on the next bokeh challenge. I received three comments and two talked about my background distracting from my photo. Thanks!!

What's up with that "boken"?
You were right in a comment though, my pic doesn't have any "boken". Frankly, your comment left me with a big "what are you talking about?". Thanks for the comment anyway, I appreciate the time you put into it.

We are not supposed to post any picture in a current challenge.

Hah! I must be better than you. I earned my first sub-5 score on my very first entry.

Keep trying and work hard and you will earn as many sub-5 scores as me.

Yea - I got that one too... :)

...and according to Mr. Rockwell it might be true - but I could find a lot of links to other pages with different definitions about what bokeh is.

Maybe the problem is that the word "bokeh" is too abstract for people?

Maybe we should call it something entirely different - my suggestion would be:

"OQOTOOFAITP"

short for:

"Overall Quality Of The Out Of Focus Areas In The Picture"

Nothing about circles or donuts or anything like that. Much simpler to define and to understand.

Let's start a revolution - "bokeh" is out, "OQOTOOFAITP" is in :-)

Edited for typos

You mean you can get scores above 5???? I was inducted into the sub-5 score club on all three of my first three challenges. :)

the word "bokeh " is too abstract, subjective, confusing , etc. I like your suggestion. I thought I had a pretty good entry for the current bokeh challenge , but I can't break 5. It's fun anyway.

It's Japanese, no? Bo ke. The "h" was added by the guy who coined the phrase to assist westerners in pronouncing it.

I am right there with you patio. I have received some very positive comments but I have also been told my photo has no bokeh at all. This is simply in accurate. By all definitions bokeh is the subjective qualities of out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens. So my photo does have bokeh. A more accurate criticism would have been that my photo is a poor use of bokeh. But it really does not matter. I am having fun. I new when I entered my photo that it would not do very well. This is my favorite photo out of the 4 challenges I have entered and I thing this one will garner the lowest score of the 4.

So does a 7.1 win this one again? Seems like you need a 7.8 to win lately. I didn't see any 7.8's in the group.

Yeah, my 'boken' is not good enough either :(
10/26/2006 05:45:42 PM · #94
we should call this a DOF challenge and not bokeh, i believe it would be a lil less abstract and confusing for people. This seems to be an extremely subjective term...

But it isn't (or shouldn't) be a depth of field challenge. It's an out of focus challenge...

Great comments (including a coveted Jutilda!)
Great Bokeh (according to the comments)
And I sit and watch the score very slowly drop. 5.8...5.6...5.5....

I may have to stop looking :)

Wait, wait... hold on... you must not have seen my entry yet. ;)

For the record, I've voted on 30% (132) of the entries and have given out 17 10s, and you mean to say there isn't a 7.8 in this group? I must really be screwing up.
