I still feel weird doing this, but I just can't resist writing about one of my favorite photographers on this site. I've been studying his works a lot lately, and I always find him to be full of surprises, yet consistent in his excellence and style.
The photographer this week is none other than Scab-Lab! His profile:

One look at Scab-lab's profile, and you can easily see that he is a master of light, drama, mood and color. He plays with these elements like my kids play Nintendo. In each of his photos, he uses interesting light to draw out color, create interest and focus, and build mood.
He is not content to simply use photography as a way to "record" things. He puts his unique point of view to making sure we understand that the apple he is photographing is not just an apple--it represents what all apples long to be in their wildest dreams. He doesn't just show us glass cubes; he shows us that glass cubes can be a focal point of the universe used to broadcast all that is mysterious and interesting and engaging about light and life and the cosmos.
I analyzed this photo of his:

Before taking this image of mine:

I find his sense of drama to be thrilling, and I never tire at gazing at the idealistic universes he asserts wtih his photography.
Go visit his site and enjoy! Most of all, learn from this master of mood and light!
Thanks Scab-Lab!
David

You might feel less weird if you start a "reviewers" club, where 2-4 people pick one photographer/week, and write a common review of the person's body of work.
Then people can quote snippets out of context to boost their print sales... |

Send royalty checks to...
Seriously, I think it would be interesting -- although perhaps a dilution of effort while we're still trying to get regular critiques done.
But I just have no more time for stuff like this anyway, so feel free to take it from here... |

Thanks David, im glad your enjoying my gallery, Im very honored .. :)
I would like to see a featured photographers section, like you guys have mentioned....it could help out on print sales, but more importantly, expose us to some work we might miss in the sea of photographers here.
Thanks again :)

This is a good idea. There's a lot of photographers here that may be getting consistantly good scores, but don't quite make it to the top, and thus are lost in the shuffle, and a featured photographer of the week or day or something would give some recognition to everyone. Make David Sidwell in charge, he'd love to add that to his list of things to do! |

I discovered scab-lab this week too! I was checking out my statistically favorite photgraphers and there he was, near the top. Wonder why I never noticed before? I sometimes forget to link photos together into a body of work until I do a CC crittique - then I look at the WHOLE person. |

I don't think you should feel at all weird about pointing out talent on the site, David. I think your kind words and generous spirit are part of what make this site so great. I followed your recommended link to view scablabs work and couldn't agree more that there is a lot to be learned from it. I probably would never have stumbled upon it if you hadn't pointed it out. So, thanks! |
