Here's a challenge idea with a twist:

**********

Acquainted With The Night - Robert Lee Frost

I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain -- and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.
I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.

I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,

But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
O luminary clock against the sky

Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night

**********

Your assignment:

Create a single photograph that represents your visual interpretation of this classic poem.

I like the idea. Actually I like Frost and always have. The Road Not Taken is another fave of mine.

I like the general idea, but think we should both entertain other suggestions, and also consider giving people a choice of several poems to pick from.

naw we don't need any more open challenges, at least this one would only include night shots...well 99% anyway...there will always be one flower macro in each challenge

I like this idea a lot. Of course I really like Robert Frost, but this poem in particular is very visual, with lots of ways to interpret it. I want to do it, even if it isn't a formal challenge.

I think this is a very good idea for a challenge!
Will make us think outside our usual box when it comes to planning our submissions - particularly if we dont normally read a lot of poetry!

Always up for a new "challenge" :-)

poe-what??? Is that like rap? ; )

Not an idea that has me jumping up & down with excitement, but as the man says ... always up for a new challenge.

To dream or not to dream, that is the question! Have the courage to try someting new and exciting. I think this challenge suggestion is just that! Oh yeah!

As much as I like the poem, I really just like the theme "Acquainted With The Night." Do you rejoice in the night? Do you fear it? Are you a different person at night? What do you see in the shadows?

I would like to see this kind of challenge, but I would like to see it have a longer shooting time then 1 week. We've discussed in several threads the possibility of having a month-long challenge running along with the weekly ones. I think this would be a perfect candidate for that kind of challenge. This is more an 'art' challenge and I for one would like the time to do it justice.

Maybe this could be a theme for monthly challenges... Picking specific poems or songs and interpreting them visually.... My personal favorite is:

Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear,
Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair,
Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't fuzzy, was he?

(author unknown)

Maybe next month?

Just let everyone pick their own poem and either show comments so we can see the poem or give us a rule on how to add the poem into our pic (white space left or right?)

Poetry does include rap, bod.
At least to me...:)

I really like this idea and may do it for myself if DPChallenge doesn't pick it up. Makes me want to roll through old Literature textbooks to look for more ideas.

Thanks for your creativity, John.

Another photography group that I belong too did this as an assignment awhile back and it went pretty good. It was called Poetry thru the Lens.

You vastly underestimate the contentiousness of some of the folks around here. I can hear it now:

- I'm sick of looking at night shots! Next week, all night shots get a 1!

- Dawn/Dusk are/aren't part of the night.

- Doesn't a knight count?

- Don't put me in a box! I can shoot any time I dam well please!

- My indoor flower macro was taken at night!

And on, and on, and on, and....

And that would start yet another voting/meets-the-challenge battle! Everyone choose up sides!

FWIW, I like the challenge as stated, this particular poem, people can choose a particular line, the overall mood, whatever strikes them, but it should have some connection with the poem. I mean, come on, read it. There are a million things you could do with that!

And, I agree on the month long challenge idea - it would be nice to have more time to work on something like this.

I think it would be quite fun to do :)

With what is going on in my life right now I want to do this challenge right now, I might actually stand a really good chance.

I like the Frost thing, if only because he is part of my paternal lineage. Very interesting, and certainly a challenge.
