weekly, members only, no edit except blah blah, JURIED challenges?

A panel of juries consisting of DPC's finest pontificates on the merits of entries, IN ADDITION to the regular voting scheme. Panel members rotate from month to month.

Themes focus on more technical aspects of photography.

The idea was to create a level playing field for members who don't want to / or can't spend much time on post processing for whatever reason.

There are 2 exclusive open challenges a week - why not 2 exclusive members challenges? a member would be alowed to enter 1 member and one open challenge each week. That way it wouldn't be any more of a burden (you wouldn't be pressured to enter another challenge) but you'd have more options. Just another member "perk" ;)

ok but why make it another basic? you already have 2 basic ones to choose from. so now we would 1 advanced and 3 basic to choose from. I think the last one should have more processing not less.

Why?
I like that only members can vote on the members challenges. Not just because of the whole risk of voter fraud thing but also because I feel the members have more vested in the site and so therefore are more likely to think about their votes more carefully and comment more thoughtfully. I realize that's a bit of a generalization but still I know I'm not the only one that feels that way.

Why Basic?
Well there's a 2 fold answer to that. For one thing many people use this site as a learning tool and would like to perfect the "taking the picture" part of photography before really jumping into major post processing work. This would allow people to enter a challenge on a more level playing field yet still have the "advantage" of only getting member votes and comments.
The other reason is more of a selfish one, I'm disabled and rarely have the energy to shoot much less post process images. I love this site and am happy to be a member though. On the rare occasions I do have the energy to shoot something basic is usually the only real option for me.

I know it may not seem like a Basic Members only challenge would be much of an incentive for people to become members but I think you might be surprised. With all the talk of trolls etc. a system that is possibly only a marginal amount more fair could be very tempting to some people...

What about a weekly, members only, NO EDIT except resize and border, challenge?

resize, rotate, crop and border would be a better set

In both cases, I take it this would be JPEG, not RAW -- otherwise how about the processing of a RAW converter?

Also, resize is certainly a given, rotate is necessary in cases where the rotation is not done automatically in-camera. But why borders? And no cropping if the purpose is to get it right in the camera.

This is leaning towards "straight from the camera", not basic. Most professional film photographers have done some basic dark room editing to get from their original to finished product--in the past as well as today. I would be more willing to support 2 advanced member challenges and occassionally make them basic only.

Edit to add: Those who shoot in RAW have a big advantage, especially in the basic challenges.

I'd like to see a Member's Challenge,
sure make it weekly, or maybe once in a while,
where we could take one image and after that,
make it a post processor's delight, anything goes!

Who ever said the world was fair? If you can't shoot raw now, then get a cam that can shoot raw.

Why punish those who can shoot raw, on the basis that some people can't or won't? As it is, I'd bet most of the ribbon winners are shooting raw anyway.

I didn't say anything about fairness, I just said they had a big advantage.

Edit to add: It could be made fair by letting everybody do in post what can legally be done in RAW.

ok I see some of your points but I don't agree with some of them. as far as "trolls" looka t some members avg score given, some of them vote much lower than you might think. here are a couple of members avg vote given that I know vote low (as is thier right) just becasue somebody pays $25 doesn't mean that they give high praise and votes.
Avg Vote Cast: 3.7516
Avg Vote Cast: 4.1586

also look at the straight from the camera challenge, many of those shots would still dominate in a basic challenge. then look at the many great basic challenge entries. Sometimes you have to do some great processing to get the result you want but with proper planing you can get as good results from basic editing. While you mention that you may not have much time for shooting and processing the same argument could be made for people that can't take the time to really get the shot perfect in camera because of whatever reason but can spend the time at the computer.

Posting a Clickable Thumbnail Preview
Posting a thumbnail preview to a thread keeps the forums looking tidy and more importantly, easy to read. By simply combining the [url] and [img] tags you can make your thumbnail clickable so that people can then view the full sized version.

So how big should a thumbnail pic be please?
