I would like to suggest a new rule set. The digital art rule set. Basically the rules would be very few. The only real rule would be that your main subject must be taken within the challenge dates and have all appropriate EXIF data. Of course this may cause arguments about what a main subject is but no more than the major element rule.

I would also suggest that a new recurring members challenge be implemented using this rule set. The challenge would run a month and voting would last a month. The extra time during the challenge gives ample time for the intense processing that some people would do and the extra voting time would give more time to really look at and vote in these challenges.

I know that many people here like the idea of less processing, not more, but many of us would like to explore this avenue as well. If people didn’t like this type of challenge they wouldn’t have to enter or vote.

anyone with me?

I was going to agree with you but then I realized you were my husband. I think I'm contractually obligated to diagree with you on all counts so in the spirit of that how does this photo fit into the situation. might not be interesting at all without the stars and moon. would that violate the major element rule? where do you draw the line? it would get kinda tough. also with the talent I've seen on this site an image like this would quite simply be too simple. I would love a challenge catergory liek this but think the rules would need to be VERY strictly set.

I'll deal with the first part when i get home:P

as far as the picture it would be legal. The main subject rule would replace the major element, if you follow. The girl is the main subject it doesn't matter what else you do. as long as the picture of her was taken durring the challenge period then you are good. the point of the new rule set is to encourage things like this.

I love digital art and would have no problem with an added member challenge. A month might be too long, how about every 2 weeks? I also think it needs a theme and description just like the other challenges.

I think you'll hear the argument the this is a digital Photography site and not a digital art site. There are many sites that cater to digital art and DPC's niche is helping people learn the basics of digital photography.

This would be spreading us too thin. There are many places on the net where you can showcase (and compete) with this sort of work, but it's not what DPC is about. I don't think we benefit from trying to be all things to all people.

Right it would have to have a theme like the other challenges. The reason I said a month was because some ideas are really grand and may require several photos to add small elements and as far as the voting, I rarely vote anymore because I can't devote the time to each image that I feel it deserves to adequately judge them, since this type of art is important to me I would like for me and everyone else to be able to really look at them since there can be many subtle elements. Also it can help people's concerns about too much stuff on the front page since it will only be an extra row of winners every 4 weeks.

this is the reaction i suspected but as i stated it wouldn't have to be for everyone. if you don't like digital art then don't vote so no extra work for you. as far as spreading the site too thin I for one would be willing to pay an extra $10 per year to do this. I know there are other sites but honestly I don't want to go to another one. I like this one.

not really sure what side your taking here.

I understand that many don't consider this photography but some people here seem to like it and think differently.

these are Joey Lawrence's stats
Selected by other users:

Photographer: 650 (view)
Photographs: 1399 times (view)

Those didn't happen because he takes technically perfect photos

How about Dax-
Selected by other users:

Photographer: 290 (view)
Photographs: 376 times (view)

alot of favorites on stuff that won't pass the advanced rules

Kiwiness has 58 total favorites on 4 recent digital art uploads.

many people seem to like this stuff not just me. but if everyone thinks this horse is dead or that this isn't the site for this then just lock this thread or let it die.

it would be fun to learn how to do it. right now I'm usually just playing around and having no clue how to make it look good.

yep. I'd like it!

edit:

Elvis_L: would the challenges also have a theme, the way you have it in mind?

There are a number of reasons that a less restrictive ruleset could be of use. Most of these reasons are not digital-art related. Perhaps the biggest reason that such a ruleset would be beneficial is for techniques requiring or benefitting from multiple exposures:

- Panoramas
- Star trail shots
- Astrophotography involving image stacking for noise reduction and/or detail extration
- HDR images
- Stop Motion series

And that's just the multiple exposure possibilities. There has been discussion of such a ruleset, but there are more pressing site needs at the present time.

I would pay an extra $10 also. Even if I didn't enter I would love to vote. It's not like members or users would be losing anything, and nobody would HAVE to enter or vote.

Echo...

...There are plenty Photoshop Chopshop sites that cater to this specific genre.

I agree. If I were able to get myself a creditcard (or one from my family or something like that) I'd also spend $10 for it. Just because I like this place and I know a lot of people could learn me and everybody a lot!

Plenty of other photo sites too but I don't go there because I like it here as I stated before. If you love fords and really only want a ford but also love the saftey and convience of Onstar, should you just go to chevy because you can get onstar even though you would prefer a ford? no you would ask that ford start using onstar, which is what I am asking here.

BTW I am very sorry that I have just compared my favotite internet site to the car company I hate the most:(

I am in favor of a more lenient ruleset but one that focuses on photography rather than digital art. You can't expect to introduce what is essentially a new genre and not have it impact the site. Not only would a largely different ruleset need to be drafted and enforced, larger portions of the forums would be dedicated to its discussion, etc. I like the focus on photography that we have here, especially given the number of other sites that focus on digital art. That's just my personal opinion.

Is there a way to make a "sister" site with the same set-up? Maybe it could be $25 for one site (either one) and $35 for both? Have a basic and advanced set of rules with different amounts of processing allowed.
08/01/2006 02:43:43 PM · #23
I posted this on another thread and Elvis suggested I check over here instead.

This is what I said:
"I'd like to see a Member's Challenge,
sure make it weekly, or maybe once in a while,
where we could take one image and after that,
make it a post processor's delight, anything goes!"

I think this goes along with what mk is suggesting. Not Digital Art, but by making an image just exactly as you want it to be using any tool in your editing program's workbox.

As far as duration of such a Challenge, I think it should be exactly the same as existing ones, and of course it should be themed.

I really don't want to see us move any further in the direction of digital art. dpc is very successful with the current format. Why mess with it? If your preferences lie in that area why not just go to the sites that are appropriate to your tastes. If we are to make any changes to the rules I think it would be more to the liking of the majority here, and more in keeping with the original teaching mission of the site, for us to abandon the so-called advanced rules and go back to all Basic rules challenges.
