I agree with Hokie... make the votes public... I think too many people gives ones... mainly for subjective reasons..

I am not sure .. I understand the point but at the same time, I do not want 200 people emailing me or asking me in a forum why I gave that to their picture or asking me explicitly to give a comment. Not saying that I do not want to give one but ... I am afraid that forums will get more 'personal' in a wrong way.
Every system has its weak point ....

Every system has its weak point but there comes a time when you have to ask..why keep it that way.
If there is an overwhelming reason to keep anonymous voting here OTHER than people fearful of others knowing their vote I would be interested to see it discussed.
Whatever...I am just one person and I am sure if anything bothered me enough I would find another site. |

I don't mind votes being openly displayed.
I tend to include my 5 and plus in my comment anyway. The reason I don't include lower ones is that sometimes it's depressing enough to be doing badly and receiving negative comments without the in-your-face downer of knowing who gave exactly which score.
But that said, I stand by my voting decisions enough to have no problem with them being published. I use the full range of 1 - 10. If lower numbers aren't meant to be used why have them? I feel it's fairer to give a couple of 1, 2 and 3 votes than to give those photos I feel are actually that bad the same (4) vote as ones I think are less bad than them.
Anyway, public votes or not, I don't mind either way.

I think it should be like Photoblink.com, 1,2,3,9,and 10 votes should not be anonymous. And make the person leave a comment to be able to give that score. |

I'm also for making the scores public. But I think forcing comments on people who give certain scores is not a good idea. I wouldn't like to get comments from people who would not have left a comment otherwise. I think they wouldn't be very honest or generally helpful.

I was one of A is for Apples 10s... It is my opinion that it qualifies as "Very good" (that's an understatement actually)... I would be interested in hearing how someone justified that shot as "Very Bad"... But I've noticed the 1 voters never speak up in forums...
I have a guess... With very few exceptions, any photograph with a child in it gets a flurry of ones... regardless of the quality... There are folks that will "Auto 1" anything with a child, a flower, a flag, or whatever else someone doesn't like... I expect to get handed a lot of these kinds of 1s this week, but I submitted knowing it's coming... So it won't bother me much...
Z, hang it on your wall... It belongs there... Great shot...

Zeissman, I loved your picture. Gave it a ten. should have left comment but I was rushing to finish. I like how the over all color harmonizes with the color of the apple and I liked that it was so basicly different from all the others therefore original.

I don't give ones... I can find some amount of merit in every photo every week...

I agree. What sort of comment do you think people will give if forced to give one? My guess is that it'll either be something abusive or they will simply type the score they gave you again. You cannot force people to give comments, doing so will drive them away from the site (maybe that's what people want?!)
I must admit though, there are a few user profiles I've seen where they have given a very low average score. It kind of makes you wonder the motives of these people!

Brian,
Don't take the low scores on here too hard. My 'former POTD' submission got quite a few negative comments, but I don't care! I decided that this place isn't going to stifle my creativity. After all, although I am sure that MANY do know at least a LITTLE about photography (and obviously some know a LOT, lol), you must realize that not every person judging and commenting on these photos knows what they are talking about. My entry was a POTD on another site, and I have also sold this print, but several people thought it far from perfect. I looked at your photos and thought they were quite good.

Willa, your picture was taken at least as far back as March (you claim a POTD for this at that time). It was, therefore, illegal in this contest and you are lucky to have scored anything! |

Well, I am very sorry. I had no idea that I submitted an 'illegal' photo! Must have missed that in the rules. I sincerely apologize for my oversight. It's OK though. I scored lousy, so not to worry, right? It won't happen again. Cross my heart.
Thanks for your response.

Kavey, Did you vote A is for Apples a 1? If so, could you explain why this is a "Very Bad" shot? If not, could you give an example of a "Very Bad" shot?
I truly only ask this to be educated, not to contradict or argue with you. I'd really like to see what a "1" is to you and why.

Addendum to my last post here:
Again, I would like to apologize for apparently submitting a photo that should not have been posted (as brought to my attention on this post by JakKing). I will enter no more challenges on this site. It was never my intention to break any rules, and especially, it was never my intention to offend or aggravate anyone.
I will stick to 'lurking' from now on.

No, I voted it a 5.
But my point was that I do on occasion vote a score of 1, and I am also active in the forums and am happy to justify the score should I be asked to.

Please don't stop submitting! It's very clear even in the announcement of the challenge topic "make sure your photo was taken in the week of (blah blah)". It's very much a rule of this site that you take the photo during the challenge week. Just make sure you follow the rules from now on, and there will be no hard feelings!
Unfortunately, I'm sure this means your photo will be disqualified (as they can be for a certain length of time after the results).

I gave this photo a 5. I am not fond of the lack of saturation is all. Personal taste. There is no way it deserved a 1 or a 2... no way. Techically, it is a strong photo... exposure, focus... all there. Although I woulda sworn that was a potato. heh
I agree with the comment about some people just don't like baby/pet/clouds photos. Still, not worth a 1 or 2 vote.

Hello, Lisa, and thanks for your response. Yeah, I really screwed up. I read it wrong. I thought it read, "make sure your photo is SUBMITTED this week, not TAKEN this week. I'm so sorry.
