Well folks, about a month ago I applied for a stringer position at a local newspaper. I wanted to try my hand at submitting freelance and doing the occasional assignment for them. Luckily for me I havent had any to do yet. I couldnt have picked a busier time for me personally to try a new venture. Anyway I had an oppurtunity fall in my lap to get some shots and submit some news. I screwed up and forgot my cardreader at home so had to wait until after my day job was over to get them sent over. I missed the cutoff time by half an hour. Not sure they would have ran anyway given the huge amount of bigger news that happened this week. But I thought I'd try anyway. Anyway thought I'd share what I submitted anyway. Thanks for looking and any ideas you could give me to make them better. Photos

VERY nice pics. I'm not sure the farther away ones would give enough info in a newspaper but the closer ones are perfect for that type of thing i think. Great work.

Thanks, I'm under the impression and I think rightly so, that Managing Editors dont always know what they want. So I have always tried to give them options so when they do decide I have hopefully covered it. Maybe I'm wrong to give them that option, maybe after getting some experience I'll find out differently.

Excellent shots Matt. I too prefer the closer shots, but all are very good.

Great shots, Matt!

May I suggest keeping the USB camera wire transfer cable (or whatever it's called) in your camera bag. I always use a card reader, but there have been instances where I needed to trasfer pictures, didn't have my card reader, and used the cable to trasnfer directly from the camera.

Good luck!

Hi Pidge,

Normally I keep the cable with the desktop at home, the cardreader in my camera bag as I carry a laptop with me. Unfortunatley I was on vacation last week and I use a different bag when I travel with the family. So I had left the card reader in the other bag when I swapped bags. Lesson learned though.

You may have done this-but you may want to try to get both horizontal and vertical versions of the same subject.

I think 1691 is excellent.

A tip:

When you shoot spot news like this where an accident of some sort is the subject, be sure to take a handful of wide angle shots from various perspectives also. Sometimes insurance companies will pay you nicely for those.

Thanks John never thought of that angle before. I have a weekly habit of putting what I feel is my best work of the week as my background on my laptop. It reminds me of what I did good this week so I have a bit of inspiration. Image 1691 is my current background.

Well I guess they felt the photos were worth taking a look at. And I'm not sure about the deadline cause I opened todays paper and on page 3 is one of my photos. Afterwhile I will upload to DPC the one that they used. Thats not bad considering it was my first attempt and all of the storms that hit the area are on the front page! I'm stoked!

Edit to add link to photo. If I can find it online I'll add that link, if not I'll try to scan it in and upload.
